Abstract
The study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of agroforestry practices. Agroforestry is an important land-use approach that integrates trees and other perennial plants with crops and, in some farming systems, livestock. Adoption of appropriate agroforestry practices can support soil conservation, improve land productivity, enhance biodiversity, provide useful farm products, and contribute to sustainable agricultural production. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of agroforestry practices, including tree planting on farmland, retention of useful trees, boundary planting, alley cropping, windbreak establishment, integration of trees with crops, and proper management of trees within agricultural fields. It will also examine the role of agricultural advisory services in providing farmers with information, technical guidance, demonstrations, and farm-level support on the selection, establishment, maintenance, and management of agroforestry practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and their adoption of agroforestry practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and the extent to which they adopt recommended agroforestry practices. It is also expected to identify areas of adoption relating to tree establishment, species selection, tree maintenance, boundary planting, integration of trees with crops, and management of tree-based farming systems. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, forestry development agencies, agricultural development organizations, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of advisory services to farmers’ adoption of agroforestry practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and field demonstrations that encourage farmers to integrate appropriate trees into their farming systems. The study will conclude that agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and technical guidance needed to improve the adoption of agroforestry practices. It will recommend regular advisory visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and technical guidance on species selection, tree establishment, maintenance, and integration with crops to encourage sustainable agroforestry management.
