Assessment of Livestock Farmers’ Sources of Animal Production Information

Abstract

Access to reliable animal production information is important for effective livestock farming, as farmers require relevant knowledge to make appropriate decisions regarding animal feeding, breeding, health, housing, disease prevention, and general farm management. Livestock farmers obtain information from different formal and informal sources, and the availability, accessibility, and usefulness of these sources may influence the quality of information available to them. Assessing farmers’ sources of animal production information is therefore important for understanding the channels through which livestock-related knowledge reaches farmers. This study will assess livestock farmers’ sources of animal production information. The study will identify the major sources from which farmers obtain information on livestock production and determine the extent to which these sources are accessed and used. It will also assess farmers’ perceived usefulness of different information sources in supporting livestock production and management decisions. The study will focus on sources such as agricultural extension agents, veterinary professionals, livestock associations, farmer groups, cooperatives, fellow farmers, agricultural input suppliers, radio, television, newspapers, agricultural publications, mobile phones, social media, internet platforms, training programmes, workshops, and demonstrations. The assessment will consider the frequency of farmers’ access to these sources, the types of information obtained, and the usefulness and reliability of the information provided. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their sources of animal production information, frequency of access, types of information received, and perceived usefulness of each source. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Appropriate statistical analysis may also be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics and their use of different information sources. The study is expected to reveal that livestock farmers obtain animal production information from a combination of formal, informal, traditional, and digital sources. Agricultural extension agents, fellow farmers, veterinary professionals, radio, farmer associations, mobile phones, and internet-based platforms may constitute important information channels. The study may also identify differences in the frequency of access and perceived reliability of these sources and reveal areas where farmers experience limited access to timely and relevant production information. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinary professionals, livestock associations, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving the dissemination of livestock production information and strengthening communication channels between farmers and agricultural service providers. It may also assist relevant organisations in selecting appropriate information channels for delivering timely and practical livestock production advice. The study concludes that farmers’ access to reliable and relevant animal production information is important for effective livestock management and decision-making. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and other livestock information providers strengthen both traditional and digital information channels, improve the accessibility of technical information, and encourage collaboration among extension agents, veterinary professionals, farmer organisations, and other information providers to ensure that livestock farmers receive timely and useful production information.
