Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Shelf-Life Assessment for Fresh Agricultural Produce

Abstract

Sesame intercropping is an agricultural practice that involves growing sesame together with compatible crops on the same farmland. The practice can contribute to efficient land utilization, crop diversification, improved farm income, and better use of available farm resources. However, successful intercropping requires appropriate knowledge of crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, timing, nutrient management, and weed control. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and practical skills needed to adopt suitable sesame intercropping practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of recommended intercropping techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of appropriate sesame intercropping practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to sesame farmers. The study will focus on extension education, sesame intercropping, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, crop combination, planting arrangement, spacing, planting time, soil fertility management, weed management, resource utilization, crop diversification, and adoption of recommended intercropping practices. Information will be obtained from sesame farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected sesame farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended sesame intercropping practices. Farmers who receive regular training, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory services may demonstrate greater adoption of suitable crop combinations, appropriate spacing, planting arrangements, and improved management practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact contributes to farmers’ ability to apply intercropping techniques effectively. The study will be useful to sesame farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote crop diversification and efficient land utilization. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes on suitable intercropping arrangements for sesame farmers. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on appropriate crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, and crop management to support effective and sustainable sesame intercropping.
