Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of moisture testing for agricultural produce. Moisture content is an important quality characteristic that can influence the storage stability, weight, market quality, and susceptibility of agricultural produce to spoilage. Farmers’ knowledge of moisture testing can therefore contribute to appropriate storage decisions, reduction of deterioration, and improvement of post-harvest management practices. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of the importance of moisture testing, appropriate moisture levels for different agricultural produce, methods of collecting samples for testing, use of moisture testing equipment, interpretation of moisture readings, and the relationship between moisture content and storage quality. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of the effects of excessive moisture on mould development, spoilage, heating, pest infestation, and overall quality of stored produce. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers involved in the production, handling, and storage of agricultural produce in the selected study area. A suitable sampling procedure will be used to select respondents, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of moisture testing for agricultural produce. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of moisture testing for agricultural produce and identify areas where knowledge may be inadequate. It is also expected to show farmers’ understanding of moisture testing procedures, appropriate moisture levels, equipment use, interpretation of test results, and the importance of moisture control before and during storage. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce handlers, and other stakeholders involved in post-harvest management. The study will provide information that can guide the development of extension training and practical demonstrations aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge of moisture testing and promoting better storage decisions. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of moisture testing is important for maintaining the quality and storability of agricultural produce. It will recommend that agricultural extension services should provide farmers with practical training, demonstrations, and technical information on moisture testing methods, the use of appropriate testing equipment, interpretation of moisture readings, and proper moisture management before storage.
