Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Livestock Disaster Preparedness

Abstract

Livestock production is an important agricultural activity that contributes to household income, food supply, employment, and rural livelihoods. However, livestock farmers may face disasters such as floods, droughts, disease outbreaks, extreme weather events, fire incidents, and other emergencies that can cause animal losses and disrupt farm operations. Adequate knowledge of livestock disaster preparedness enables farmers to identify potential risks, protect animals, prepare emergency resources, and respond appropriately during disaster situations. Assessing farmers’ knowledge is therefore important for understanding their level of preparedness and identifying areas where agricultural extension support may be required. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of livestock disaster preparedness. The study will examine farmers’ understanding of common livestock disasters, appropriate preventive measures, emergency response procedures, animal evacuation practices, emergency feeding and watering arrangements, animal health protection, and measures for reducing livestock losses during disasters. It will also assess farmers’ awareness of appropriate actions to take before, during, and after livestock-related emergencies. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of livestock disaster risks, disaster preparedness practices, emergency livestock care, animal evacuation procedures, emergency feed storage, water provision, livestock shelter protection, animal identification, disease prevention, emergency communication, and disaster response planning. Attention will also be given to farmers’ sources of disaster preparedness information and their access to agricultural extension services relating to livestock emergency management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of livestock disaster preparedness. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used to examine differences in knowledge levels across relevant farmer characteristics and sources of information. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of livestock disaster preparedness. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of common livestock risks and basic emergency measures, while others may have limited knowledge of systematic disaster preparedness and response procedures. The study may also reveal gaps in knowledge relating to livestock evacuation, emergency feed and water management, disease prevention, animal identification, and protection of livestock facilities during disasters. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinary personnel, government agricultural agencies, livestock development organizations, non-governmental organizations, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for designing extension programmes and educational interventions aimed at improving farmers’ understanding of livestock disaster risks and preparedness practices. It may also support the development of practical disaster preparedness guidelines for livestock-producing communities. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of livestock disaster preparedness is important for reducing livestock losses and improving farmers’ ability to respond effectively to emergencies. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and livestock development agencies strengthen farmer education on disaster preparedness, provide practical training on emergency livestock management, and improve farmers’ access to timely information on livestock disaster prevention and response.
