Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Indigenous Agricultural Innovation Documentation

Abstract

Indigenous agricultural innovations represent locally developed knowledge, techniques, practices, and solutions that farmers use to address production challenges and improve the management of agricultural resources. These innovations may be developed from farmers’ experiences and adapted to local environmental and production conditions. Proper documentation of such innovations is important for preserving indigenous knowledge, supporting research, facilitating knowledge sharing, and ensuring that useful agricultural practices are not lost over time. Farmers’ knowledge of innovation documentation is therefore important for the preservation and dissemination of locally developed agricultural solutions. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of indigenous agricultural innovation documentation. It will examine farmers’ awareness and understanding of the importance of documenting indigenous agricultural innovations and determine their level of knowledge regarding appropriate documentation methods. The study will also identify the sources through which farmers obtain information and guidance on documenting indigenous agricultural innovations. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of documentation methods such as written records, notebooks, photographs, videos, audio recordings, mobile applications, farmer registers, and other appropriate digital and non-digital tools. Areas of assessment will include identifying indigenous innovations, recording their development processes, describing their uses, documenting materials and procedures, preserving innovation-related information, and sharing documented knowledge with other farmers and agricultural stakeholders. Farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services, research institutions, farmer organizations, and digital technologies will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to determine farmers’ levels of awareness and knowledge of indigenous agricultural innovation documentation. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to agricultural information and their knowledge of documentation practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding the documentation of indigenous agricultural innovations. Farmers with greater exposure to extension services, agricultural training, research activities, farmer organizations, and digital technologies may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge than farmers with limited exposure. The study may also reveal that although many farmers possess valuable indigenous innovations, they may have limited knowledge of systematic methods for recording, preserving, and communicating information about these innovations. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, researchers, agricultural development agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for designing extension programmes that promote the preservation and documentation of indigenous agricultural knowledge. The findings may also assist agricultural researchers and extension organizations in identifying knowledge gaps and developing simple documentation approaches that farmers can use to preserve and share their innovations. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of indigenous agricultural innovation documentation is important for preserving locally developed agricultural knowledge and supporting the dissemination of useful farm innovations. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide practical training on simple documentation methods, including written records, photographs, audio recordings, videos, and mobile-based tools. Extension programmes should also encourage collaboration between farmers, researchers, and extension personnel to ensure that valuable indigenous agricultural innovations are properly recorded, preserved, and shared.
