Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Improved Horticultural Nursery Practices

Abstract

Improved horticultural nursery practices involve the application of recommended techniques for producing healthy, vigorous, and high-quality seedlings for vegetable, fruit, ornamental, and other horticultural crops. Proper nursery management is important for successful crop establishment because the quality of seedlings can influence plant growth, survival, yield, and overall production performance. Practices such as appropriate site selection, seed selection, nursery bed preparation, sowing, watering, shading, fertilization, pest and disease management, hardening, and transplanting are therefore important components of effective horticultural nursery production. Farmers’ knowledge of these practices is essential for producing quality planting materials and improving horticultural productivity. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of improved horticultural nursery practices. The study will determine the level of knowledge farmers possess regarding recommended nursery production techniques and identify areas where knowledge gaps may exist. It will also examine the major sources of information available to farmers and assess their access to agricultural extension services, training programmes, demonstrations, and other sources of technical information relating to horticultural nursery management. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of nursery site selection, soil and nursery bed preparation, seed selection and treatment, seed sowing, spacing, watering, shading, nutrient management, weed control, pest and disease management, seedling protection, hardening, seedling selection, and transplanting. Attention will also be given to farmers’ knowledge of appropriate nursery tools and materials, timing of nursery operations, and recommended practices for maintaining healthy and vigorous seedlings. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected horticultural farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of improved nursery practices and sources of nursery management information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine factors associated with farmers’ knowledge of improved horticultural nursery practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding improved horticultural nursery practices. Farmers who have greater access to extension education, practical demonstrations, training programmes, and relevant technical information may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. The study may also identify knowledge gaps in areas such as seed treatment, watering, shading, nutrient management, pest and disease control, hardening, and proper transplanting. Constraints such as limited extension contact, inadequate training, high cost of nursery materials, and limited access to improved technical information may also be identified. The study will be useful to horticultural farmers, agricultural extension agents, nursery operators, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may assist in designing targeted extension programmes and training activities that address farmers’ knowledge gaps in nursery management. Improved knowledge of nursery practices may contribute to better seedling quality, higher plant survival after transplanting, improved crop establishment, increased horticultural productivity, and reduced production losses. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of improved horticultural nursery practices is important for producing quality planting materials and achieving successful horticultural production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical nursery demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, field days, and accessible advisory services. Farmers should also be provided with timely technical information and improved access to quality seeds, nursery materials, and appropriate production inputs to support effective nursery management.
