Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Geospatial Information for Farm Management
Abstract
The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of geospatial information for farm management, focusing on farmers’ understanding of location-based information and technologies that can support agricultural planning, monitoring, and decision-making. Geospatial information provides useful data about the location, distribution, and characteristics of farm resources and conditions. Its application in agriculture can support farm mapping, land-use planning, crop monitoring, soil assessment, weather-related decisions, and efficient management of agricultural resources. However, farmers’ ability to benefit from geospatial information may depend on their level of knowledge and access to relevant agricultural information and technologies. The study will examine farmers’ knowledge of basic geospatial concepts and their awareness of tools such as maps, Global Positioning System devices, satellite imagery, geographic information systems, and mobile-based location technologies. It will also assess farmers’ understanding of how geospatial information can be used for farm boundary identification, land-use planning, crop monitoring, identification of farm resources, assessment of field conditions, and agricultural decision-making. In addition, the study will identify farmers’ major sources of information about geospatial technologies, including agricultural extension personnel, fellow farmers, training programmes, agricultural institutions, digital platforms, and other information sources. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of geospatial information and its applications in farm management. The data obtained will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to examine farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of geospatial information and its applications in farm management. Farmers who have greater exposure to agricultural extension education, digital technologies, practical training, and agricultural information may demonstrate better understanding of geospatial tools and their potential uses. However, limited access to technology, inadequate training, poor digital literacy, high costs of some geospatial tools, and insufficient extension support may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural institutions, technology providers, and farmers’ organizations on the importance of improving farmers’ knowledge of geospatial information. Strengthening extension education through practical demonstrations, digital training, and simplified geospatial information may improve farmers’ ability to apply location-based information in farm planning and management. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of geospatial information can support more informed farm management decisions and efficient utilization of agricultural resources. It will recommend increased extension education, practical training on accessible geospatial tools, improved digital agricultural information services, and stronger collaboration among extension personnel, technology providers, and farmers to promote effective use of geospatial information in agriculture.
