Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Fruit Tree Pruning Techniques
Abstract
Fruit trees are important components of agricultural production because they provide food, income, employment, and raw materials for households and agro-based activities. Proper pruning is an essential fruit tree management practice that helps control tree growth, improve sunlight penetration and air circulation, remove damaged or unproductive branches, and support healthy fruit development. However, inadequate knowledge of appropriate pruning techniques may limit farmers’ ability to manage fruit trees effectively and achieve desirable production outcomes. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of fruit tree pruning techniques. It will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of recommended pruning practices and examine their understanding of the importance, timing, methods, and tools used in fruit tree pruning. The study will also identify the major sources of information through which farmers acquire knowledge about fruit tree pruning. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of pruning objectives, selection and use of pruning tools, appropriate pruning periods, removal of dead and diseased branches, thinning of overcrowded branches, removal of water shoots and suckers, maintenance of suitable tree shape, branch spacing, heading and thinning cuts, wound management, and safe disposal of pruned materials. It will also consider farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, training, demonstrations, advisory visits, and horticultural information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from fruit tree farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of recommended pruning techniques and sources of pruning information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, frequency distributions, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to examine factors associated with farmers’ knowledge of fruit tree pruning techniques. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among fruit tree farmers regarding recommended pruning techniques. Farmers who have greater exposure to agricultural extension services, practical demonstrations, training programmes, and technical information may demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate pruning methods. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to pruning timing, tool selection, branch removal, tree shaping, and post-pruning management. The study will be useful to fruit tree farmers, agricultural extension agents, horticultural organisations, agricultural development agencies, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders involved in fruit production. It may provide useful information for identifying farmers’ specific knowledge gaps and improving the delivery of orchard management education. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing practical training and demonstration programmes on fruit tree pruning. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of fruit tree pruning techniques is important for effective orchard management and sustainable fruit production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, advisory visits, and dissemination of simple and relevant information on recommended pruning techniques. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate in horticultural training programmes and adopt appropriate pruning methods to improve tree health, fruit production, and orchard productivity.
