Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Fresh Produce Handling During Transportation

Abstract

Fresh agricultural produce requires careful handling during transportation to maintain quality, reduce physical damage, minimize spoilage, and preserve market value. Poor transportation practices such as excessive loading, inappropriate packaging, rough handling, inadequate ventilation, and prolonged exposure to unsuitable conditions can contribute to significant postharvest losses. Farmers’ knowledge of proper produce handling during transportation is therefore important for improving the quality and marketability of perishable agricultural products. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of fresh produce handling during transportation. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of recommended transportation practices, identify the handling methods commonly used by farmers, and assess their understanding of factors that influence produce quality during movement from farms to markets or storage facilities. It will also identify areas where farmers may require additional technical information and practical guidance. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of fresh produce transportation, harvesting and pre-transport preparation, sorting, grading, packaging, loading, stacking, ventilation, temperature management, vehicle selection, transportation duration, handling procedures, unloading, physical damage prevention, and post-transport inspection. Information will be obtained from farmers involved in the production and marketing of perishable agricultural produce to assess their understanding of appropriate transportation handling techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to assess farmers’ level of understanding, while appropriate inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of fresh produce transportation practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding appropriate handling of fresh produce during transportation. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of sorting, packaging, loading, and unloading, while others may have limited knowledge of ventilation, temperature management, vehicle suitability, stacking, and damage prevention. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that contribute to deterioration, physical damage, and postharvest losses during transportation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, produce marketers, transport operators, cooperatives, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for designing extension education programmes on improved transportation handling of perishable agricultural produce. The findings may also assist stakeholders in promoting practical and affordable transportation practices that can reduce postharvest losses and improve the quality and market value of fresh produce. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of transportation handling practices is important for maintaining the quality and reducing losses associated with fresh agricultural produce. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education on proper sorting, grading, packaging, loading, stacking, ventilation, transportation conditions, and unloading procedures. Practical demonstrations and postharvest handling training should also be provided to improve farmers’ knowledge and promote better management of fresh produce during transportation.
