Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Water Pump Operation

Abstract

Farm water pumps are important agricultural equipment used to supply water for irrigation, livestock production, and other farm activities. Proper operation of water pumps is essential for efficient water delivery, effective use of irrigation systems, prevention of equipment damage, and continuity of farm operations. Farmers’ knowledge of pump operation is therefore important because inadequate understanding of operating procedures can result in poor performance, excessive fuel or energy consumption, equipment breakdown, and inefficient water use. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of farm water pump operation. The study will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of the basic procedures involved in operating water pumps and examine their understanding of safe and efficient pump use. It will also identify the major sources of information through which farmers acquire knowledge about water pump operation and determine areas where additional technical education may be required. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of pump components, starting and stopping procedures, priming, fuel or power requirements, water flow control, pressure monitoring, adjustment of pump settings, proper connection of pipes and hoses, prevention of air entry, identification of abnormal pump performance, and safe operating procedures. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of operating pumps according to irrigation requirements and appropriate measures for preventing damage during use. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of farm water pump operation. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine farmers’ knowledge levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics, training exposure, access to technical information, and knowledge of water pump operation. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of farm water pump operation. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic starting, stopping, water flow, and safety procedures, while others may have limited understanding of priming, pressure control, equipment settings, and fault identification. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate technical training, limited access to equipment manuals, lack of skilled technicians, and insufficient extension support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation development agencies, farm machinery technicians, agricultural development programmes, farmers’ associations, equipment suppliers, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ technical knowledge and promote efficient operation of water pumps in agricultural production. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of farm water pump operation is important for efficient water management and proper utilization of agricultural equipment. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant technical institutions provide farmers with practical demonstrations, training programmes, farm visits, and accessible instructional materials on water pump operation. Farmers should also be encouraged to follow recommended operating procedures and seek technical assistance when necessary to improve pump efficiency, reduce equipment damage, and support sustainable farm water management.
