Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Efficient Agricultural Water Management
Abstract
Efficient agricultural water management is important for improving farm productivity, conserving available water resources, and supporting sustainable agricultural production. Farmers require adequate knowledge of appropriate water application, irrigation scheduling, water conservation, drainage, and efficient use of available water resources to minimize wastage and maintain crop productivity. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of efficient agricultural water management is therefore important for identifying areas of knowledge and practice that may require improvement. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of efficient agricultural water management. It will examine farmers’ understanding of appropriate water-use practices, irrigation methods, water conservation techniques, and measures for reducing water losses during agricultural production. The study will also assess farmers’ knowledge of the importance of proper water management for crop growth, soil conditions, farm productivity, and sustainable use of water resources. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of irrigation scheduling, water application methods, water conservation, drainage management, soil moisture management, rainwater harvesting, water storage, and efficient irrigation technologies. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of practices such as drip irrigation, mulching, appropriate watering intervals, maintenance of irrigation facilities, and prevention of unnecessary water losses. Sources of farmers’ water-management information, including extension services and farmer-to-farmer communication, will also be assessed. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate knowledge assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between farmers’ access to agricultural information and their knowledge of efficient water management practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of efficient agricultural water management practices. Farmers with greater exposure to extension services, irrigation training, practical demonstrations, and reliable agricultural information may demonstrate stronger knowledge of water conservation and efficient application techniques. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to irrigation scheduling, water-saving technologies, soil moisture management, and maintenance of irrigation systems. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation authorities, government agricultural agencies, water-resource management institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for developing farmer training programmes, improving extension education, promoting water-saving technologies, and strengthening sustainable agricultural water management. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of efficient agricultural water management is important for helping farmers conserve water resources and improve farm production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations and relevant agricultural agencies strengthen farmer education, practical demonstrations, and advisory services on irrigation management, water conservation, efficient water application, and modern water-saving technologies.
