Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agroforestry species selection. Appropriate selection of tree and shrub species is important for successful agroforestry systems because species differ in their growth characteristics, environmental requirements, economic value, and compatibility with crops and livestock. Adequate knowledge of suitable species can help farmers establish productive agroforestry systems while improving soil protection, biodiversity, and sustainable land management. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of factors considered when selecting agroforestry species, including adaptation to local climatic and soil conditions, growth characteristics, compatibility with crops, usefulness for livestock, provision of fuelwood, production of fruits or other products, soil improvement potential, resistance to environmental stresses, and ease of management. It will also examine farmers’ ability to identify suitable species for different farm objectives and production conditions. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of agroforestry species selection. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of agroforestry species selection and identify areas of adequate and inadequate knowledge. It is also expected to provide information on farmers’ understanding of species suitability, environmental adaptation, crop compatibility, economic benefits, livestock uses, soil improvement, and other considerations relevant to selecting appropriate agroforestry species. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, forestry development agencies, environmental management institutions, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on farmers’ knowledge of agroforestry species selection. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes, demonstrations, and technical guidance that improve farmers’ ability to select appropriate species for different agroforestry purposes. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agroforestry species selection is important for establishing productive and sustainable agroforestry systems. It will recommend regular extension education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on species identification, environmental suitability, crop compatibility, economic value, and appropriate agroforestry system design to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and support sustainable land management.
