Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Waste Disposal Planning

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agricultural waste disposal planning, focusing on their understanding of appropriate methods for planning, managing, and disposing of waste generated from agricultural activities. Agricultural waste such as crop residues, animal manure, used containers, packaging materials, and other farm by-products can create environmental and health challenges when poorly managed. Adequate knowledge of waste disposal planning is therefore important for reducing pollution, maintaining clean farm environments, protecting soil and water resources, and promoting sustainable agricultural production. The study will examine farmers’ knowledge of agricultural waste identification, sorting, storage, transportation, treatment, disposal, and safe handling practices. It will also assess farmers’ understanding of appropriate disposal methods for different categories of agricultural waste and their awareness of the environmental and health consequences of improper waste disposal. In addition, the study will identify farmers’ major sources of information on agricultural waste disposal planning, including agricultural extension personnel, fellow farmers, farmers’ organizations, training programmes, agricultural media, and environmental agencies. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural waste disposal planning and their sources of relevant information. The data obtained will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to examine farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural waste disposal planning. Farmers who have greater access to agricultural extension education, practical demonstrations, environmental information, and waste management training may demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate disposal procedures. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to waste management facilities, insufficient information, high disposal costs, and poor awareness of environmental risks may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, environmental agencies, policymakers, farmers’ organizations, and development agencies on areas where farmers require additional education and technical support. Strengthening extension education through practical demonstrations, waste management training, and accessible information may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate agricultural waste disposal planning and encourage responsible waste management. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural waste disposal planning is essential for effective farm waste management and sustainable agricultural production. It will recommend increased extension education, regular farmer training, practical demonstrations, improved access to waste management facilities, and stronger collaboration among farmers, extension personnel, and relevant environmental stakeholders.
