Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Resource Recovery

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agricultural resource recovery, focusing on their understanding of methods used to recover and reuse valuable resources from agricultural residues, wastes, and by-products. Agricultural resource recovery can help reduce waste, conserve natural resources, improve soil fertility, lower farm production costs, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Adequate knowledge of resource recovery methods is therefore important for enabling farmers to make productive use of materials that might otherwise be discarded. The study will examine farmers’ knowledge of different agricultural resource recovery practices, including composting of organic materials, use of crop residues as mulch or animal feed, recovery of nutrients from animal waste, recycling of suitable farm materials, and other appropriate methods of converting agricultural by-products into useful resources. It will also assess farmers’ understanding of the benefits and appropriate management of recovered agricultural resources. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural resource recovery and their sources of information. The data obtained will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be employed to examine farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural resource recovery practices. Farmers who have greater access to agricultural extension services, practical demonstrations, training programmes, and relevant agricultural information may demonstrate better knowledge of resource recovery methods. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to appropriate technologies, lack of practical training, insufficient information, and financial constraints may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and environmental stakeholders on areas where farmers require additional education and technical support. Strengthening extension education through practical demonstrations, farmer training, and accessible information on resource recovery may improve farmers’ knowledge and encourage more efficient utilization of agricultural residues and by-products. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural resource recovery is important for promoting efficient resource utilization, reducing agricultural waste, and supporting sustainable agricultural production. It will recommend increased extension education, practical training, field demonstrations, improved access to appropriate resource recovery technologies, and stronger collaboration between extension personnel and farmers.
