Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Innovations Introduced by Research Institutions

Abstract

Agricultural research institutions play an important role in developing and introducing new technologies, practices, and innovations aimed at improving agricultural production, productivity, resource management, and farmers’ livelihoods. Farmers’ knowledge of these innovations is important because adequate understanding can influence their ability to evaluate, apply, and benefit from new agricultural technologies. Agricultural extension services and other information channels are essential for communicating research-based innovations from institutions to farmers. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural innovations introduced by research institutions. It will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of selected agricultural innovations and assess their understanding of the purpose, benefits, application, and management requirements of these innovations. The study will also identify the major sources through which farmers obtain information about innovations developed or introduced by agricultural research institutions. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of improved crop varieties, improved production techniques, soil management technologies, pest management practices, irrigation technologies, post-harvest technologies, livestock production innovations, climate-smart agricultural practices, and other relevant research-based innovations. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to research institutions, agricultural extension agents, demonstration farms, field trials, farmer training programmes, agricultural cooperatives, radio programmes, and digital platforms as sources of information on agricultural innovations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of agricultural innovations introduced by research institutions. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while knowledge indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the level of farmers’ knowledge and the factors associated with their knowledge of research-based agricultural innovations. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural innovations introduced by research institutions. Farmers with greater exposure to extension services, demonstrations, field trials, training programmes, and direct interactions with agricultural researchers may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited access to research information, weak communication between research institutions and farmers, low participation in demonstrations, limited literacy, and poor access to agricultural information may contribute to knowledge gaps. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, research institutions, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, technology developers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the extent to which research-based agricultural innovations are understood by farmers and identify gaps in technology communication and dissemination. The findings may also assist research institutions and extension agencies in improving the delivery of information and training on agricultural innovations. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is an important component of the successful dissemination and application of agricultural innovations developed by research institutions. It is therefore recommended that research institutions and extension agencies strengthen farmer-oriented communication through demonstrations, field trials, practical training, farmer-researcher interactions, extension materials, radio programmes, and digital information platforms to improve farmers’ understanding of relevant agricultural innovations.
