Assessment of Farmers’ Exposure to Agricultural Radio Programmes

Abstract

Agricultural radio programmes provide farmers with accessible information on crop production, livestock management, agricultural technologies, market opportunities, weather conditions, and other farming-related activities. Radio remains an important communication channel for reaching farmers, particularly those in rural communities where access to extension personnel and digital communication technologies may be limited. Farmers’ exposure to agricultural radio programmes may therefore influence their access to agricultural information and their awareness of recommended farming practices. This study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural radio programmes. It will examine the frequency with which farmers listen to agricultural radio programmes, the types of agricultural information they obtain, and the extent to which they use radio as a source of agricultural knowledge. The study will also determine the level of farmers’ awareness of agricultural information provided through radio programmes. The study will focus on farmers’ access to agricultural radio programmes, listening frequency, duration of exposure, preferred programme content, sources of agricultural information, and farmers’ awareness of agricultural practices communicated through radio. It will also examine farmers’ preferred times and formats for agricultural broadcasts, including interviews, expert discussions, farmer experiences, question-and-answer sessions, market information, and agricultural news. Factors that may affect farmers’ exposure, such as radio ownership, availability of electricity, programme accessibility, language of broadcast, and interest in agricultural information, will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural radio programmes and access to agricultural information. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques such as correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine relationships between farmers’ exposure to agricultural radio programmes and their level of agricultural information awareness. The study is expected to reveal that farmers’ exposure to agricultural radio programmes varies according to listening frequency, programme accessibility, availability of radio devices, language of broadcast, and the relevance of programme content to farmers’ needs. Farmers who frequently listen to agricultural programmes may demonstrate greater awareness of agricultural information and recommended farming practices. However, inadequate programme scheduling, poor reception, limited electricity supply, language barriers, and insufficient agricultural content may restrict farmers’ exposure to radio-based agricultural information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, radio broadcasters, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving the design and delivery of agricultural radio programmes and strengthening the use of radio as an agricultural extension communication channel. It may also assist extension professionals and broadcasters in developing programmes that are accessible, relevant, understandable, and responsive to farmers’ information needs. The study concludes that exposure to agricultural radio programmes is an important aspect of farmers’ access to agricultural information and can contribute to the dissemination of useful agricultural knowledge. It is therefore recommended that agricultural radio programmes should be regularly scheduled, presented in languages familiar to farmers, and designed around relevant agricultural information needs. Broadcasters and extension agencies should also improve programme content, farmer participation, technical information, and accessibility to strengthen the effectiveness of radio-based agricultural extension communication.
