Assessment of Farmers’ Awareness of Biotechnology Applications in Crop Production

Abstract

Biotechnology applications in crop production involve the use of biological processes, organisms, and scientific techniques to improve crop production, quality, productivity, and resilience. Agricultural biotechnology may include practices and technologies such as tissue culture, marker-assisted selection, genetically modified crops, biofertilizers, biopesticides, and other biological techniques used to address production challenges. Farmers’ awareness of these applications is important because adequate information can influence their understanding, perception, and ability to make informed decisions regarding agricultural technologies. Agricultural extension services can play an important role in providing farmers with reliable information about biotechnology and its potential applications in crop production. This study will assess farmers’ awareness of biotechnology applications in crop production. The study will determine the level of awareness farmers possess regarding different agricultural biotechnology applications and identify the specific technologies that farmers are more or less familiar with. It will also examine farmers’ sources of biotechnology information and their access to agricultural extension services, training programmes, demonstrations, media, research institutions, and other information channels. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of tissue culture, genetically modified crops, marker-assisted crop improvement, biofertilizers, biopesticides, biological pest management, disease-resistant crop varieties, drought-tolerant varieties, improved planting materials, and other biotechnology-related applications relevant to crop production. Attention will also be given to farmers’ awareness of the potential benefits, limitations, safety considerations, availability, and appropriate use of biotechnology applications in agricultural production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their level of awareness of biotechnology applications, sources of information, and exposure to extension and other agricultural information services. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine factors associated with farmers’ awareness of biotechnology applications in crop production. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of awareness of biotechnology applications among farmers. Farmers who have greater access to agricultural extension services, agricultural information, training programmes, demonstrations, and reliable information sources may demonstrate higher levels of awareness. The study may also reveal differences in awareness across specific biotechnology applications, with some technologies being more familiar to farmers than others. Information gaps, misconceptions, limited extension contact, inadequate training, high technology costs, and limited access to reliable biotechnology information may also be identified. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, biotechnology researchers, agricultural development agencies, universities, research institutes, farmer associations, government institutions, and policymakers. The findings may provide useful information for designing extension and awareness programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of agricultural biotechnology. Increased awareness may help farmers better understand available technologies, evaluate their potential applications, access reliable technical information, and make informed decisions regarding biotechnology-related crop production practices. The study concludes that farmers’ awareness of biotechnology applications is important for improving their understanding of modern crop production technologies and their potential contribution to agricultural development. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant research institutions strengthen farmer education through training programmes, practical demonstrations, field days, farmer meetings, radio programmes, and other accessible information channels. Reliable and understandable information on the applications, benefits, limitations, and appropriate use of biotechnology should be provided to farmers to improve informed awareness and understanding.
