Assessment of Farmers’ Awareness of Agritourism Opportunities in Rural Communities

Abstract

Agritourism is an emerging area of rural development that combines agricultural activities with tourism experiences and provides opportunities for farmers to generate additional income from farm resources and activities. Agritourism may involve farm visits, educational farm tours, cultural experiences, farm-based recreation, direct sales of agricultural products, livestock experiences, and participation in agricultural activities. Awareness of these opportunities is important because farmers need adequate information and knowledge to identify, assess, and participate in agritourism activities. This study will assess farmers’ awareness of agritourism opportunities in rural communities. It will determine farmers’ level of awareness of different agritourism activities and assess their knowledge of the potential economic and social opportunities associated with agritourism. The study will also identify the major sources through which farmers obtain information about agritourism and examine factors associated with their level of awareness. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of farm tours, agricultural demonstrations, farm-based recreation, educational visits, cultural and traditional experiences, accommodation services, direct marketing of farm products, food-related experiences, livestock activities, and other tourism opportunities linked to agricultural resources. It will also consider farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, tourism information, social media, community organisations, cooperatives, government programmes, and other sources of information about agritourism. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their awareness of agritourism opportunities and sources of agritourism information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean awareness scores, awareness indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to assess farmers’ level of awareness and factors associated with awareness of agritourism opportunities. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of awareness of agritourism opportunities among farmers in rural communities. Farmers with greater access to extension services, tourism information, community networks, digital platforms, and relevant training may demonstrate higher levels of awareness. However, inadequate information, limited tourism infrastructure, lack of financial resources, insufficient extension support, poor market linkages, and limited knowledge of tourism-related business activities may restrict farmers’ awareness of available agritourism opportunities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, rural development agencies, tourism authorities, community organisations, cooperatives, policymakers, researchers, and non-governmental organisations. It may provide useful information on farmers’ awareness of agritourism opportunities and the information gaps affecting their participation. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing awareness programmes and training that encourage farmers to explore suitable farm-based tourism opportunities. The study concludes that awareness of agritourism opportunities is important for enabling farmers to identify alternative income-generating activities and utilise agricultural resources more effectively. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and rural development organisations incorporate agritourism information into farmer training and advisory programmes. Relevant authorities should also improve access to tourism information, business training, infrastructure, and market linkages to enhance farmers’ awareness and potential participation in appropriate agritourism activities.
