Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Seedling Production Techniques
Abstract
Improved seedling production techniques involve the use of recommended methods for producing healthy, vigorous, and high-quality seedlings for successful crop establishment. The quality of seedlings plays an important role in determining plant survival, early growth, productivity, and final yield. Practices such as proper nursery site selection, quality seed selection, seed treatment, nursery bed preparation, appropriate sowing, watering, shading, nutrient management, pest and disease control, hardening, and careful transplanting are essential for effective seedling production. Farmers’ adoption of these practices is therefore important for improving crop establishment and overall agricultural productivity. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of improved seedling production techniques. The study will determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended seedling production practices and identify the specific techniques that are widely or less frequently adopted. It will also examine farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, sources of seedling production information, and the level of technical support available to farmers in adopting improved seedling production methods. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of improved seed selection, seed treatment, nursery site selection, soil preparation, nursery bed preparation, sowing methods, spacing, watering, shading, fertilizer and manure application, weed management, pest and disease control, seedling protection, hardening, seedling selection, and transplanting practices. Attention will also be given to farmers’ use of appropriate nursery tools and materials, timing of nursery operations, and management practices used to maintain healthy and vigorous seedlings before field establishment. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their adoption of improved seedling production techniques, access to extension services, sources of information, and production characteristics. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine factors associated with farmers’ adoption of improved seedling production techniques. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of improved seedling production techniques among farmers. Farmers with greater access to extension education, practical demonstrations, training programmes, improved seeds, and technical information may demonstrate higher adoption levels. The study may also identify constraints affecting adoption, including high costs of nursery materials, limited access to quality seeds, inadequate extension contact, insufficient technical knowledge, water availability, pest and disease problems, and limited access to appropriate nursery equipment. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, nursery operators, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may provide useful information for designing extension programmes and interventions aimed at improving seedling production and crop establishment. Increased adoption of improved techniques may contribute to better seedling quality, higher plant survival, improved crop establishment, reduced production losses, and increased agricultural productivity and farm income. The study concludes that the adoption of improved seedling production techniques is important for producing quality planting materials and achieving successful crop establishment. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical nursery demonstrations, training programmes, farm visits, field days, and regular advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with access to quality seeds, suitable nursery materials, water resources, appropriate equipment, and timely technical information to encourage wider adoption of improved seedling production techniques.
