Abstract
Improved farm machinery operating practices are important for enhancing the efficiency, safety, and productivity of agricultural operations. Appropriate use of tractors, planters, harvesters, threshers, processing machines, and other farm equipment can reduce labour requirements, minimise operational delays, improve the quality of farm work, and support timely agricultural production. However, the benefits of farm machinery may depend on farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended operating practices, including proper machine handling, adjustment, maintenance, and safety procedures. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of improved farm machinery operating practices. It will determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended practices for operating agricultural machinery and identify the common machinery operating practices used during farm production activities. The study will also examine factors that may influence farmers’ adoption of improved machinery operating practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as proper machine inspection before operation, correct machine adjustment, appropriate operating speed, safe handling procedures, proper use of protective equipment, routine cleaning, lubrication, maintenance, and correct storage of machinery. It will also consider farmers’ access to machinery information, training, technical assistance, machinery ownership or hiring, availability of spare parts, operating experience, and access to agricultural extension services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their level of adoption of improved farm machinery operating practices. Descriptive statistics, adoption indices, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to analyse the data and assess the extent of adoption and factors associated with farmers’ use of improved machinery operating practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of improved farm machinery operating practices among farmers. Farmers with access to machinery training, technical guidance, extension information, and reliable machinery services may demonstrate greater adoption of recommended operating practices. However, inadequate technical knowledge, high machinery costs, limited access to spare parts, poor maintenance facilities, insufficient training, and limited availability of qualified machinery operators may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, machinery operators, agricultural mechanisation agencies, equipment suppliers, policymakers, cooperatives, and researchers. It may provide useful information on farmers’ machinery operating practices and the challenges affecting the effective use of agricultural equipment. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in designing training and advisory programmes that promote safer and more efficient machinery operation. The study concludes that adoption of improved farm machinery operating practices is important for achieving efficient, safe, and sustainable agricultural mechanisation. It is therefore recommended that farmers receive regular practical training on machinery operation, adjustment, maintenance, and safety procedures. Extension agencies and agricultural mechanisation organisations should strengthen technical advisory services and improve farmers’ access to appropriate machinery information, spare parts, maintenance services, and skilled operators.
