The Influence of Vertical Circulation on Multi-Storey Building Accessibility
Abstract
Vertical circulation is a fundamental component of multi-storey building design because it determines how users move between different levels and access the full range of spaces within a building. Staircases, ramps, lifts, escalators, and associated circulation areas play important roles in connecting floors and supporting building functionality. Inadequate vertical circulation can create barriers for persons with mobility limitations, elderly users, and other occupants who may have difficulty using stairs. This study examines the influence of vertical circulation on accessibility in multi-storey buildings and evaluates how circulation systems contribute to inclusive and efficient movement. The study focuses on the design, location, capacity, and connectivity of vertical circulation elements within multi-storey buildings. Factors such as stair dimensions, ramp gradients, lift provision, landing areas, circulation widths, and the relationship between vertical and horizontal movement routes are assessed. Attention is given to how these elements are positioned in relation to entrances, major activity areas, and functional spaces on different floors. The study examines whether vertical circulation systems provide convenient and equitable access to all levels. Lift provision is particularly important in ensuring accessibility for users who cannot comfortably or safely use stairs. The number, size, location, and operational efficiency of lifts can influence travel distances and waiting times within multi-storey buildings. Similarly, appropriately designed ramps can provide alternative routes where changes in level occur. The study therefore considers the adequacy of these facilities and their ability to support independent movement for diverse categories of users. The relationship between vertical circulation and spatial organization is also examined. Poorly positioned stairs or lifts may create long horizontal travel distances, confusing routes, or disconnected circulation networks. Conversely, strategically located vertical circulation points can improve wayfinding and provide convenient connections between different floors. The study assesses how vertical circulation integrates with corridors, lobbies, entrances, and functional spaces to create continuous and understandable movement systems. Safety and user experience are additional considerations in the assessment. Staircases and ramps should provide safe movement through appropriate dimensions, handrails, lighting, surface conditions, and visibility, while lifts should be conveniently accessible and clearly identifiable. Emergency evacuation requirements also influence the location and number of staircases within multi-storey buildings. The study therefore considers how vertical circulation contributes to everyday accessibility, spatial orientation, emergency movement, and overall user confidence. The study aims to provide a better understanding of the influence of vertical circulation on accessibility in multi-storey buildings. It is expected to identify common deficiencies in stairs, ramps, lifts, and related circulation spaces and establish design considerations for improving universal access, safety, convenience, and wayfinding. The findings will be useful to architects, planners, developers, and facility managers in creating multi-storey buildings that provide equitable and efficient movement between floors for diverse users.
