The Influence of Spatial Design on User Experience in Escape-Room Facilities
Abstract
Escape-room facilities are immersive recreational environments that combine architectural space, storytelling, puzzles, technology, and controlled interaction to create challenging and engaging experiences for users. Unlike conventional entertainment spaces, their success depends significantly on how spatial characteristics influence users' perception, movement, interaction, anticipation, and emotional responses. Poor spatial planning may weaken immersion, create circulation difficulties, reduce safety, or interfere with gameplay. This study examines the influence of spatial design on user experience in escape-room facilities, with emphasis on how architectural decisions can support immersion, functionality, comfort, and engagement. The study focuses on key spatial characteristics including room configuration, spatial sequencing, scale, enclosure, visibility, circulation, transitions, and the relationship between game areas and supporting spaces. The arrangement of interconnected rooms can influence how users discover clues, interpret their surroundings, and progress through an experience. Carefully planned spatial sequences can create anticipation and controlled discovery, while varied room proportions and levels of enclosure can contribute to atmosphere and psychological engagement. The study therefore considers how spatial organization can be used as an active component of escape-room experiences. Lighting, colour, materials, sound, textures, and visual elements are also considered important in shaping user perception. Controlled lighting can establish mood and direct attention, while acoustic design can support immersion and maintain separation between simultaneous game sessions. Material selection, surface finishes, thematic details, and visual cues can reinforce narratives and create distinctive environments. The integration of these sensory elements with spatial planning can strengthen the relationship between physical space and gameplay while avoiding excessive stimulation that may reduce comfort or clarity. The study further examines circulation and functional relationships within escape-room facilities. Game spaces need to be connected effectively to reception areas, briefing rooms, waiting spaces, staff control rooms, equipment areas, toilets, emergency exits, and support facilities. Staff should be able to monitor and manage activities without unnecessarily disrupting the user experience. Emergency access and safe escape routes must remain clearly planned even when the facility uses concealed doors, restricted visibility, enclosed rooms, and thematic architectural elements as part of the game environment. User experience may also be influenced by group size, age, physical ability, familiarity with escape-room activities, and individual preferences. Flexible spatial arrangements can accommodate different group configurations and activity formats, while accessible design can allow a wider range of users to participate. Adequate ventilation, thermal comfort, lighting, acoustic conditions, and spatial dimensions are necessary to maintain physical comfort during extended sessions. The design should balance mystery and immersion with sufficient safety, orientation, accessibility, and user control. The study aims to assess how spatial design influences user experience in escape-room facilities and to identify architectural strategies that can improve engagement, immersion, comfort, and operational effectiveness. The findings are expected to contribute to the design of recreational and immersive entertainment facilities by demonstrating the importance of spatial sequencing, sensory design, circulation, accessibility, safety, and functional integration. A well-considered spatial design approach can transform escape-room facilities into engaging environments that provide memorable experiences while maintaining appropriate standards of comfort and safety.
