The Influence of Public Reception Design on Service Accessibility
Abstract
Public reception spaces serve as important transition and service points within buildings, connecting users with administrative personnel, information, and essential services. The design of these spaces can significantly influence how easily people identify service points, understand procedures, move through the building, and obtain assistance. Poorly organized reception areas may create confusion, congestion, unnecessary movement, and barriers to service access. Examining the relationship between reception design and service accessibility is therefore important for improving the functionality and inclusiveness of public buildings. This study examines the influence of public reception design on service accessibility, focusing on the spatial and architectural characteristics that affect users' ability to access available services. Factors such as entrance configuration, reception desk location, circulation routes, waiting areas, signage, visibility, seating arrangements, and spatial zoning are considered. The study evaluates how these features influence users' movement, orientation, communication, and interaction with service personnel. Particular attention is given to the relationship between the reception area and other major service spaces within public buildings. The research further investigates how visibility and spatial legibility contribute to efficient service access. Reception desks that are clearly visible from building entrances can help users identify where to obtain assistance, while direct and unobstructed circulation routes can reduce unnecessary movement. Appropriate signage, information displays, and intuitive spatial organization may also improve wayfinding and reduce dependence on staff assistance. These characteristics are considered important in creating reception environments that support efficient and independent access to services. In addition, the study considers physical and environmental conditions that can affect accessibility within reception areas. Adequate lighting, comfortable waiting spaces, suitable acoustic conditions, sufficient circulation width, and accessible service counters can improve the experience of different categories of users. The relationship between reception design and the needs of elderly persons, persons with disabilities, first-time visitors, and other users with varying levels of mobility and familiarity is also examined. Inclusive reception design is therefore considered as an important component of equitable service provision. Despite their functional importance, some public reception spaces may suffer from inadequate spatial organization, poorly positioned service desks, limited waiting areas, confusing signage, restricted circulation, and insufficient accessibility provisions. These conditions can delay service access and create frustration for users. The study therefore emphasizes the need for reception spaces to integrate clear spatial hierarchy, universal accessibility, effective wayfinding, and efficient staff-user interaction within the overall building layout. The study aims to assess how architectural design characteristics of public reception spaces influence users' ability to access building services. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, facility managers, public institutions, and building designers in developing reception environments that are accessible, legible, efficient, and user-friendly. By improving the relationship between reception spaces and service areas, public buildings can provide more effective access while supporting inclusivity and positive user experiences.
