The Influence of Interior Design on Visitor Experience in Cultural Facilities
Abstract
Interior design plays an important role in shaping how visitors perceive, navigate, and interact with cultural facilities such as museums, galleries, heritage centres, cultural centres, and exhibition spaces. The quality of interior environments can influence visitors' comfort, emotional responses, engagement, and understanding of cultural content. Elements such as spatial organization, lighting, colour, materials, furniture, acoustics, signage, and visual displays contribute to the overall character and usability of these facilities. This study examines the influence of interior design on visitor experience in cultural facilities, with emphasis on the relationship between interior environmental qualities and visitor satisfaction. The study assesses key interior design elements that influence visitor experience, including spatial layout, circulation, exhibition arrangement, lighting, colour schemes, material selection, furniture, and interior finishes. Attention is given to how these elements affect visitor movement, orientation, comfort, visual attention, and interaction with cultural exhibits. The study also considers the relationship between functional requirements and aesthetic qualities in creating interior environments that are attractive, accessible, and appropriate for different types of cultural activities. Lighting and visual presentation are particularly important in cultural facilities because they influence the visibility, interpretation, and emotional impact of exhibits and displays. The study examines how natural and artificial lighting, display positioning, colour, textures, and material choices contribute to the atmosphere and visual identity of cultural interiors. Acoustics and environmental comfort are also considered because excessive noise, glare, poor ventilation, or uncomfortable temperatures may negatively affect the visitor experience and reduce engagement with cultural content. The study further investigates the role of spatial organization and circulation in facilitating positive visitor experiences. Clearly defined routes, appropriate spatial transitions, adequate resting areas, accessible facilities, and effective signage can improve orientation and reduce confusion within cultural buildings. The study considers how interior design can support different visitor activities, including viewing, learning, social interaction, relaxation, and participation in cultural events. Attention is also given to how flexible interior spaces can accommodate changing exhibitions and diverse visitor needs. Several factors may influence visitor responses to interior design, including cultural background, age, accessibility requirements, previous experience, duration of visit, and purpose of visitation. The study therefore recognizes the importance of designing inclusive interior environments that respond to diverse users without compromising cultural identity or architectural character. Balancing aesthetic expression with functionality, accessibility, comfort, and interpretive requirements is considered essential for creating meaningful visitor experiences. The study concludes that interior design has a significant influence on visitor experience in cultural facilities by shaping comfort, orientation, engagement, perception, and interaction with cultural content. Thoughtful integration of spatial planning, lighting, materials, furniture, acoustics, display systems, and signage can enhance both the functional and experiential quality of cultural interiors. The study recommends user-centred interior design approaches, inclusive planning, appropriate environmental controls, effective wayfinding, flexible exhibition spaces, and context-sensitive design strategies to improve visitor satisfaction and strengthen cultural engagement.
