The Influence of Entrance Design on Commercial Building User Experience

Abstract

The entrance of a commercial building represents an important point of transition between the external environment and the interior spaces, influencing users' first impressions and subsequent experiences. As commercial buildings accommodate diverse users, entrance design must respond to requirements for accessibility, identification, comfort, security, and efficient movement. Poorly designed entrances may create confusion, congestion, discomfort, or negative perceptions of the building. This study examines the influence of entrance design on commercial building user experience, with emphasis on how architectural characteristics shape users' perceptions and interactions with commercial environments. The study focuses on key entrance design elements including entrance visibility, scale, proportions, accessibility, circulation, signage, lighting, materials, doors, canopies, and the relationship between entrances and surrounding outdoor spaces. These features are examined in relation to how easily users can identify, approach, enter, and navigate commercial buildings. The organization of entrance areas and their connection to reception spaces, circulation routes, retail areas, and other functional zones are also considered as important factors affecting the overall user experience. Particular attention is given to the role of entrance design in influencing user perception and orientation. Clearly visible and appropriately positioned entrances can help users understand building organization and reduce difficulties associated with wayfinding. Adequate signage, lighting, and spatial definition can further improve legibility, while appropriate proportions and material selection can contribute to positive visual impressions. The study therefore considers entrance design as both a functional and experiential component of commercial architecture. The study also examines how entrance design affects accessibility, comfort, and movement for different categories of users. Entrances should accommodate pedestrians, persons with disabilities, elderly users, customers carrying goods, and other visitors without creating unnecessary barriers. Weather protection, adequate waiting areas, security screening, door operation, and pedestrian circulation can further influence convenience and satisfaction. The relationship between these factors is considered in determining how effectively entrance spaces support diverse commercial building users. In addition, the study considers the influence of entrance appearance and environmental character on users' perceptions of commercial buildings. Attractive and well-maintained entrances can communicate qualities such as professionalism, safety, openness, and commercial identity. Conversely, poorly maintained, poorly illuminated, or visually confusing entrances may reduce user confidence and satisfaction. The study recognizes that entrance experience is shaped by the interaction between physical design, building management, surrounding context, and patterns of user movement. The study aims to assess the influence of entrance design on commercial building user experience and identify architectural features that contribute to positive, accessible, comfortable, and efficient entrance environments. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, developers, facility managers, and other built-environment professionals in designing commercial building entrances that respond effectively to functional and experiential requirements. The study also contributes to improved understanding of how entrance design can strengthen user satisfaction and the overall quality of commercial buildings.
