The Influence of Building Forecourts on Public Gathering Activities

Abstract

Building forecourts are transitional outdoor spaces located between buildings and their surrounding public environments, often serving as important areas for arrival, waiting, gathering, and social interaction. Their design and spatial character can influence how people use the areas surrounding public, institutional, commercial, and community buildings. Well-planned forecourts can provide opportunities for informal meetings, events, relaxation, and social activities, while poorly designed spaces may remain underused or function only as circulation areas. Understanding their influence on public gathering activities is therefore important in contemporary architectural and urban design. This study examines the influence of building forecourts on public gathering activities, with emphasis on their spatial and functional characteristics. Factors such as size, configuration, accessibility, seating, landscaping, shading, pedestrian circulation, visibility, and relationship with building entrances are considered. The study investigates how these characteristics affect the ability of forecourts to accommodate different types of gathering activities. Attention is also given to the relationship between forecourt design and the intensity, duration, and distribution of public use. The research further explores how the physical organization of forecourts can encourage social interaction and collective activities. Seating arrangements, open areas, pedestrian connections, landscaping features, and visual relationships with building entrances can influence where people gather and how they interact. Forecourts that provide clear but flexible spaces may accommodate informal conversations, waiting, small events, and spontaneous social encounters. The relationship between active building uses and forecourt activity is also examined to understand how surrounding functions contribute to public space use. In addition, environmental conditions are considered as important factors affecting the usability of building forecourts. Shade, natural ventilation, vegetation, thermal comfort, lighting, and protection from excessive weather exposure can determine how long users remain within these spaces. Safety, visibility, accessibility, and separation from vehicular movement are also examined in relation to public gathering. Providing a balance between movement, gathering, and quieter areas can allow forecourts to support diverse activities without creating conflicts among users. Despite their potential social value, many building forecourts may be dominated by parking, vehicular access, poorly positioned landscaping, inadequate seating, insufficient shade, or excessive hard surfaces. These conditions can limit opportunities for gathering and reduce the attractiveness of the space as a public environment. The study therefore emphasizes the importance of integrating pedestrian movement, environmental comfort, seating, landscaping, accessibility, and flexible activity areas into forecourt design. The study aims to assess how building forecourt design influences public gathering activities and identify architectural and planning strategies that can enhance their social and functional value. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, urban designers, planners, and property developers in creating forecourts that support inclusive public use and meaningful social interaction. Effective forecourt design can strengthen the relationship between buildings and surrounding public spaces while contributing to more active and welcoming urban environments.
