The Effect of Screen Reflection on Visual Comfort in Computer Laboratories
Abstract
Screen reflection is an important visual comfort issue in computer laboratories because excessive reflections on monitor displays can reduce screen readability, cause visual distraction, and increase eye strain among users. Computer laboratories typically contain multiple screens, artificial lighting sources, windows, and reflective interior surfaces that can interact to produce unwanted glare. Poorly controlled reflections may affect students' concentration and efficiency during computer-based learning. This study examines the effect of screen reflection on visual comfort in computer laboratories and assesses the architectural and environmental factors contributing to reflective conditions. The study focuses on the relationship between computer screen position, window location, artificial lighting, workstation arrangement, and interior surface characteristics. Factors such as screen orientation, viewing angle, window-to-wall ratio, lighting direction, ceiling and wall finishes, and workstation spacing are assessed. Attention is given to how these elements influence the occurrence and intensity of reflections on computer screens and the ability of users to view displayed information comfortably. Natural lighting can contribute significantly to screen reflection when windows are positioned directly in front of, behind, or alongside computer workstations. Direct sunlight and bright external surfaces may be reflected on screens, reducing contrast and making displayed information difficult to read. The study therefore examines the influence of window orientation, shading devices, blinds, curtains, and workstation positioning on screen reflection. Appropriate control of daylight is considered essential for achieving comfortable visual conditions. Artificial lighting is another important factor affecting screen reflections in computer laboratories. Poorly positioned luminaires can create reflected images or bright spots on screens, particularly when glossy displays and reflective surfaces are used. The study considers the placement, intensity, distribution, and type of artificial lighting in relation to screen orientation and user viewing angles. Interior finishes and furniture surfaces are also examined based on their potential contribution to reflected glare. The assessment further considers users' perceptions of visual comfort, including screen readability, eye fatigue, glare sensitivity, concentration, and overall satisfaction. Differences in workstation location may result in varying levels of visual discomfort within the same laboratory. The study therefore examines how spatial arrangement and environmental conditions influence users' experiences and identifies design factors that can reduce visual disturbances across different workstation positions. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effect of screen reflection on visual comfort in computer laboratories. It is expected to identify common sources of screen reflection and establish architectural and environmental strategies for improving screen visibility and reducing visual discomfort. The findings will be useful to architects, educational planners, facility managers, and laboratory designers in developing computer laboratories with appropriate lighting, workstation orientation, shading, interior finishes, and spatial arrangements that support comfortable and effective computer-based learning.
