The Effect of Cinema Lobby Design on User Experience

Abstract

The cinema lobby is an important transitional and social space that shapes visitors' first impressions and influences their experience before and after film screenings. Beyond serving as an entrance and circulation area, the lobby accommodates activities such as ticketing, queuing, social interaction, waiting, concession purchases, and movement between different parts of the cinema. Its spatial organization, visual character, environmental quality, and functional facilities can therefore influence user comfort and satisfaction. This study examines the effect of cinema lobby design on user experience, with emphasis on the relationship between lobby characteristics and visitor perceptions. The study assesses key architectural and interior design elements of cinema lobbies, including spatial layout, entrance configuration, ticketing areas, waiting spaces, concession zones, seating, signage, lighting, finishes, and decorative features. Attention is given to the organization of these elements and their influence on user movement and activities. The study also considers the relationship between lobby size, visitor capacity, furniture arrangement, and the ability of the space to accommodate peak periods without creating excessive congestion. Circulation and wayfinding are important components of cinema lobby design because visitors must easily identify entrances, ticketing points, screening rooms, toilets, concession areas, and exits. The study examines how spatial hierarchy, signage, visibility, and clear circulation routes influence users' ability to navigate the lobby. Particular attention is given to queue organization and the separation of different movement patterns to minimize conflicts between visitors entering, waiting, purchasing refreshments, and accessing screening areas. The study further investigates how environmental and aesthetic qualities influence the user experience within cinema lobbies. Factors such as lighting, colour, materials, acoustics, ventilation, thermal comfort, seating, and visual identity are considered in relation to user satisfaction and perceived atmosphere. A well-designed lobby can create an inviting environment that encourages users to remain comfortable while waiting and supports social interaction. The integration of branding and thematic interior elements is also considered as a means of strengthening the identity of the cinema environment. Accessibility and flexibility are additional considerations in evaluating cinema lobby design. The study examines whether lobby spaces adequately accommodate children, older adults, persons with disabilities, and visitors with different mobility requirements. Accessible entrances, seating, ticketing points, circulation routes, and facilities are considered essential for inclusive user experience. The ability of lobby spaces to accommodate changing visitor volumes, special events, promotional activities, and temporary displays is also examined. The study concludes that cinema lobby design has a significant effect on user experience by influencing comfort, movement, orientation, social interaction, and overall visitor satisfaction. Effective spatial organization, clear wayfinding, appropriate environmental conditions, comfortable waiting areas, accessibility, and attractive interior design can improve the quality and functionality of cinema lobbies. The study recommends user-centred planning, efficient circulation and queue systems, inclusive accessibility provisions, flexible waiting spaces, appropriate lighting and materials, and cohesive interior design strategies to enhance cinema lobby experiences.
