The Effect of Architectural Design on Social Interaction in Community Buildings
Abstract
Architectural design plays an important role in shaping social interaction within community buildings by influencing how people meet, communicate, participate in activities, and develop social relationships. Community buildings such as community centres, multipurpose halls, libraries, and civic facilities provide shared environments where individuals from different backgrounds can interact. However, poorly designed spaces may discourage interaction through inadequate seating, weak spatial connections, excessive separation, or limited opportunities for informal gathering. Examining the relationship between architectural design and social interaction is therefore important for creating more inclusive and socially responsive community environments. This study examines the effect of architectural design on social interaction in community buildings, focusing on how spatial organization and physical design characteristics influence patterns of social behaviour. The study evaluates the arrangement of communal spaces, meeting areas, circulation zones, entrances, courtyards, outdoor spaces, and multipurpose facilities. It also considers the relationships between public, semi-public, and private areas. The study seeks to determine how effectively architectural spaces encourage opportunities for users to meet, communicate, collaborate, and participate in community activities. Particular attention is given to spatial characteristics that can encourage or discourage social interaction. Factors such as seating arrangements, spatial openness, visibility, proximity between activity areas, circulation patterns, thresholds, shared facilities, and flexible spaces are examined. The influence of courtyards, verandas, atria, foyers, terraces, and other transitional spaces is also considered. Well-connected and appropriately scaled spaces can encourage spontaneous encounters and extended social interaction, while isolated or poorly connected spaces may reduce opportunities for engagement. The study further considers environmental and user-related factors that influence social behaviour. Natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustics, landscape elements, visual connections, privacy, and perceived safety are examined in relation to users' willingness to occupy and interact within community spaces. The needs of different age groups and user categories are also considered to determine whether spaces provide inclusive opportunities for social participation. These factors demonstrate that social interaction is influenced by both spatial design and the quality of the surrounding environment. Challenges affecting social interaction in community buildings may include excessive compartmentalization, inadequate communal areas, poor seating provision, limited accessibility, weak visual connections, environmental discomfort, and insufficient flexibility. Such conditions can reduce the frequency and quality of social encounters and limit the ability of community buildings to support diverse activities. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated design approach that combines spatial connectivity, flexible programming, environmental comfort, accessibility, safety, and opportunities for both planned and spontaneous interaction. The study concludes that architectural design can significantly influence social interaction by shaping opportunities for encounter, communication, participation, and community engagement. It recommends well-connected communal spaces, flexible activity areas, comfortable seating, appropriate spatial hierarchy, strong visual relationships, accessible circulation, and attractive indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, community organizations, and facility managers in developing community buildings that promote inclusive social interaction and strengthen community participation.
