Assessment of Veranda Design and Its Influence on Residential Outdoor Activities
Abstract
Verandas are important transitional spaces in residential architecture because they provide sheltered areas that connect indoor living spaces with the outdoor environment. Beyond their circulation function, verandas can support activities such as sitting, social interaction, relaxation, children's play, informal dining, and household tasks. The design and quality of these spaces can therefore influence how frequently and comfortably residents use outdoor areas within their homes. This study assesses veranda design and examines its influence on residential outdoor activities, with attention to how architectural characteristics affect patterns of use and user experience. The study focuses on key design characteristics of residential verandas, including size, depth, width, orientation, enclosure, roof form, floor level, access points, and relationship with adjoining rooms. The arrangement of furniture and the availability of sufficient usable floor area are also examined in relation to different household activities. Particular attention is given to the spatial connection between verandas, living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, gardens, and residential compounds to determine how effectively verandas function as intermediate spaces between indoor and outdoor environments. Environmental conditions are considered as important factors influencing veranda use. The assessment examines natural shading, solar exposure, ventilation, daylight, rainfall protection, thermal comfort, and visual connection with the surrounding environment. These factors can determine whether residents find verandas comfortable during different periods of the day and under varying weather conditions. The study also considers the contribution of vegetation, landscaping, screens, railings, and roof overhangs to the environmental quality and usability of residential verandas. The study further investigates how veranda design influences the type, duration, and frequency of outdoor activities undertaken by residents. Well-designed verandas may encourage informal social interaction, relaxation, outdoor meals, domestic activities, and interaction with neighbours or household members. The level of privacy provided by the veranda is also examined because excessive exposure to adjacent properties, streets, or public areas may discourage certain activities. The relationship between privacy, accessibility, visibility, and social interaction is therefore considered in assessing residential outdoor use. Potential limitations affecting veranda utilization are also examined. These may include inadequate dimensions, excessive solar heat, poor ventilation, insufficient weather protection, limited privacy, inappropriate furniture placement, poor drainage, and weak connections to outdoor spaces. Such conditions may cause residents to avoid verandas despite their potential value as functional extensions of the home. Identifying these challenges can provide insight into how residential veranda design can be improved to support diverse household activities. The study concludes that effective veranda design can contribute significantly to the quality and use of residential outdoor spaces. Appropriate dimensions, environmental protection, ventilation, privacy, accessibility, furniture flexibility, and strong connections to gardens and other outdoor areas can encourage more frequent and diverse residential activities. The findings are expected to contribute to residential architectural design strategies that treat verandas as functional living spaces and improve the relationship between indoor accommodation and outdoor domestic environments.
