Assessment of Sustainable Construction Practices Among Local Contractors
Abstract
Sustainable construction practices are increasingly important in reducing the environmental, economic, and social impacts associated with building development. Local contractors play a significant role in determining how construction materials, labour, energy, water, and waste are managed during project implementation. However, limited technical knowledge, financial constraints, weak regulatory enforcement, and inadequate access to sustainable materials and technologies may affect the adoption of environmentally responsible construction practices. This study therefore assesses sustainable construction practices among local contractors and examines their level of implementation in building projects. The study focuses on key sustainable construction practices adopted during different stages of building construction. These include efficient material use, waste reduction, recycling and reuse, responsible sourcing of materials, water conservation, energy efficiency, pollution control, site management, and appropriate use of locally available resources. Attention is given to the extent to which local contractors integrate these practices into procurement, construction planning, site operations, and project management. Particular consideration is given to construction waste management and material efficiency. Poor handling of construction materials can result in excessive waste, increased project costs, and unnecessary environmental impacts. The study examines practices such as accurate material estimation, proper storage, material reuse, waste segregation, recycling, and responsible disposal. The use of locally sourced materials is also considered in relation to reducing transportation impacts and supporting local economic development. The research further examines resource and energy management practices on construction sites. Efficient use of water, electricity, fuel, and construction equipment can reduce resource consumption and operational costs. The study considers measures such as equipment efficiency, water reuse, controlled energy consumption, dust suppression, erosion control, and appropriate site drainage. The adoption of environmentally preferable materials and construction methods is also examined as part of broader sustainable construction performance. The study also considers the factors influencing contractors' adoption of sustainable practices. These may include project cost, client requirements, availability of sustainable materials, technical expertise, access to finance, government regulations, market demand, training opportunities, and awareness of environmental issues. The role of construction professionals, regulatory agencies, suppliers, and clients in encouraging or limiting sustainable practices is also considered in relation to local construction conditions. The study aims to assess the level and effectiveness of sustainable construction practices among local contractors and identify barriers and opportunities for improving their adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for contractors, clients, architects, engineers, policymakers, and regulatory authorities seeking to promote more sustainable building construction. By strengthening contractor capacity, improving access to sustainable resources, enhancing regulatory support, and increasing awareness, local construction practices can contribute to reduced environmental impacts, improved resource efficiency, and more sustainable building development.
