Assessment of Shared Compound Spaces in Multi-Family Housing

Abstract

Shared compound spaces are important components of multi-family housing, providing residents with common areas for circulation, recreation, social interaction, parking, children's activities, and everyday outdoor use. These spaces form an intermediate zone between individual dwelling units and the wider neighbourhood, making their planning important for residential community life. However, inadequate space allocation, poor organization, overcrowding, and limited amenities can reduce their functionality. Assessing shared compound spaces is therefore important for improving the quality and usability of multi-family residential environments. This study assesses shared compound spaces in multi-family housing, focusing on their spatial organization, accessibility, functionality, environmental quality, and patterns of use. It considers common courtyards, walkways, parking areas, landscaped spaces, play areas, seating areas, and other shared outdoor facilities. Attention is given to how these spaces relate to individual housing units, entrances, circulation routes, service areas, and neighbouring properties. The study examines physical characteristics such as compound size, spatial configuration, surface treatment, circulation patterns, seating provision, landscaping, shading, lighting, and the distribution of shared facilities. Appropriate spatial organization can support different activities while reducing conflicts between pedestrians, vehicles, children, and other users. The relationship between shared spaces and dwelling entrances is also considered in relation to accessibility, visibility, convenience, and opportunities for informal interaction. Environmental conditions are further assessed through factors such as natural shading, vegetation, ventilation, drainage, thermal comfort, and outdoor cleanliness. Well-landscaped and adequately shaded compound spaces may encourage residents to spend more time outdoors and interact with neighbours, while poorly maintained or environmentally uncomfortable areas may remain underused. The study also considers how drainage, waste management, security lighting, and surface conditions affect the safety and usability of shared spaces. The assessment further considers social and management issues associated with shared compound spaces. Differences in household needs, age groups, privacy preferences, and patterns of use can create competing demands for common areas. Poorly defined boundaries between pedestrian, recreational, parking, and private zones may result in conflicts and reduced privacy. Effective planning and management can help establish a balance between communal interaction, individual privacy, safety, and efficient use of limited outdoor space. The study aims to identify the architectural and environmental characteristics that contribute to effective shared compound spaces in multi-family housing. The findings are expected to provide useful considerations for improving residential site planning and the quality of common outdoor areas. The research may assist architects, housing developers, planners, and facility managers in creating shared compounds that are accessible, comfortable, safe, environmentally responsive, and supportive of positive residential community interaction.
