Assessment of Laundry-Space Provision in Contemporary Housing

Abstract

Laundry spaces are essential service areas within residential buildings, supporting activities such as washing, drying, ironing, sorting, and storage of clothing and household fabrics. As contemporary housing becomes increasingly compact and multifunctional, the provision and organization of laundry spaces can significantly influence household convenience, circulation, hygiene, and space utilization. Inadequate laundry facilities may result in washing activities being carried out in unsuitable areas, while poorly located facilities can create unnecessary movement and service conflicts. Assessing laundry-space provision is therefore important for improving residential functionality. This study assesses laundry-space provision in contemporary housing, focusing on the adequacy, location, accessibility, size, and functional organization of laundry areas. It considers dedicated laundry rooms, utility areas, outdoor washing spaces, service yards, and integrated laundry facilities within kitchens or bathrooms. Attention is given to the relationship between laundry spaces and bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, service entrances, drying areas, and other household spaces. The study examines spatial requirements for washing, sorting, drying, ironing, and storage activities. Adequate work surfaces, appliance clearance, storage provision, circulation space, and appropriate equipment arrangement can improve the efficiency of laundry activities. The positioning of washing machines, sinks, drying racks, ironing surfaces, and storage units is considered in relation to workflow and the reduction of unnecessary movement within the dwelling. Environmental conditions are further assessed through ventilation, natural lighting, moisture control, drainage, thermal comfort, and acoustic considerations. Laundry activities can generate significant moisture and heat, making adequate ventilation and appropriate drainage important for maintaining healthy indoor conditions. Where laundry facilities are located close to living or sleeping spaces, noise and vibration from appliances may also affect residential comfort. The assessment also considers the relationship between laundry-space provision, household size, lifestyle, accessibility, and housing type. Larger households may require greater washing, drying, and storage capacity, while elderly residents or persons with limited mobility may require conveniently located and accessible facilities. Compact housing may require flexible or multifunctional laundry solutions, whereas larger dwellings may accommodate dedicated service areas. Effective planning should therefore respond to varying household requirements. The study aims to identify the spatial, functional, and environmental requirements for effective laundry-space provision in contemporary housing. The findings are expected to contribute to improved residential planning by highlighting ways of integrating laundry facilities without compromising space efficiency, hygiene, comfort, and accessibility. The research may assist architects, housing developers, interior designers, and homeowners in creating laundry areas that support efficient household routines and contemporary residential lifestyles.
