Assessment of Interior Circulation in Large Public Buildings

Abstract

Interior circulation is a critical component of large public buildings because it determines how efficiently and safely users move between entrances, functional spaces, service areas, and emergency exits. The complexity and scale of such buildings can create challenges related to orientation, congestion, accessibility, and movement efficiency. Poorly planned circulation routes may result in confusing layouts, bottlenecks, excessive walking distances, and conflicts between different user groups. This study assesses interior circulation in large public buildings and examines how spatial planning influences movement, accessibility, safety, and overall building functionality. The study focuses on the organization and performance of major circulation elements, including corridors, stairways, ramps, lifts, lobbies, atriums, and connecting spaces. Attention is given to the width, length, configuration, visibility, and connectivity of circulation routes and their relationships with major activity areas. The assessment also considers the distribution of entrances and vertical circulation elements in relation to the overall building layout. These factors are examined to determine their effectiveness in supporting smooth and understandable movement. Wayfinding is an important consideration in the assessment of interior circulation, particularly in buildings that accommodate large numbers of unfamiliar users. Clear visual connections, identifiable destinations, appropriate signage, landmarks, and logical spatial sequences can improve users' ability to navigate complex environments. Conversely, poorly connected spaces, hidden circulation routes, and excessive changes in direction can increase confusion and movement difficulties. The study therefore evaluates how circulation design supports intuitive navigation and spatial orientation. The assessment also considers accessibility and inclusivity within circulation systems. Large public buildings should provide convenient movement for people with different physical abilities, including wheelchair users, elderly persons, and individuals with temporary mobility limitations. The availability and positioning of ramps, lifts, accessible corridors, handrails, and appropriate circulation widths are considered in relation to universal access requirements. Effective circulation should allow different categories of users to move independently and safely throughout the building. Safety and crowd management are further factors influencing the performance of interior circulation systems. High-traffic areas can experience congestion where circulation routes are undersized or poorly connected to major public spaces. The study considers pedestrian flow, intersection points, bottlenecks, emergency escape routes, and separation between service and public movement. Attention is also given to how circulation planning can support evacuation and reduce conflicts during periods of high occupancy. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting interior circulation in large public buildings. It is expected to identify common circulation deficiencies and establish design considerations for improving movement efficiency, accessibility, wayfinding, safety, and user experience. The findings will provide useful guidance for architects, planners, and facility managers in developing large public buildings with clear, inclusive, and efficient internal circulation systems.
