Assessment of Building Information Modelling Adoption Among Architectural Firms
Abstract
Building Information Modelling (BIM) has emerged as an important digital approach for improving the planning, design, documentation, coordination, and management of building projects. Its ability to integrate building information within a coordinated digital model has created opportunities for greater efficiency, accuracy, collaboration, and informed decision-making in architectural practice. However, the extent to which architectural firms adopt and effectively utilize BIM varies considerably depending on organizational, technical, financial, and professional factors. This study assesses BIM adoption among architectural firms, focusing on the level of awareness, implementation, and practical use of BIM technologies within architectural workflows. The assessment considers the application of BIM in conceptual design, design development, visualization, documentation, multidisciplinary coordination, quantity information, and project communication. It also examines the extent to which BIM has become integrated into routine architectural processes rather than being used only for specific project requirements. The study further investigates factors influencing BIM adoption within architectural firms. These include availability of hardware and software, staff competence, training opportunities, management support, perceived benefits, implementation costs, project requirements, client expectations, and compatibility with existing workflows. The study also considers the role of organizational culture and professional attitudes in determining the willingness of architectural firms to transition from conventional computer-aided design processes to more integrated BIM-based approaches. The benefits associated with BIM adoption are also examined in relation to architectural practice. Effective BIM implementation can improve drawing coordination, reduce information inconsistencies, facilitate design visualization, enhance communication among project participants, and support more efficient project documentation. It can also provide architects with opportunities to improve design analysis and make more informed decisions concerning building performance, materials, construction processes, and project management. Despite its potential benefits, architectural firms may encounter challenges such as high implementation costs, inadequate training, shortage of skilled personnel, software limitations, interoperability problems, resistance to organizational change, and limited client demand. Smaller firms may face additional difficulties due to restricted financial and technological resources. Addressing these challenges requires appropriate training, institutional support, investment in digital infrastructure, management commitment, and the development of clear implementation strategies suited to different types and sizes of architectural practices. The study aims to assess the level of BIM adoption among architectural firms and identify the major factors influencing its implementation and effective use. The findings are expected to provide useful information for architects, professional organizations, educational institutions, technology providers, and policymakers seeking to strengthen digital capacity within the architectural profession. Ultimately, the study seeks to support more effective BIM adoption and contribute to improved collaboration, productivity, design quality, and project delivery within contemporary architectural practice.
