Assessment of Architectural Design in Community Centres
Abstract
Community centres serve as important public facilities that provide spaces for social interaction, recreation, education, cultural activities, meetings, and community development. The quality of their architectural design can significantly influence how effectively these activities are accommodated and how users perceive and interact with the facility. Appropriate design responses are therefore essential for creating community centres that are accessible, functional, comfortable, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of diverse community groups. This study assesses architectural design in community centres, focusing on the relationship between spatial organization, building functionality, user needs, and overall environmental quality. Key design considerations include functional zoning, circulation, accessibility, flexibility, spatial capacity, privacy, indoor and outdoor spaces, and the relationship between communal and activity areas. The study also examines how architectural decisions support the different social, recreational, educational, and cultural activities undertaken within community centres. The study further evaluates the effectiveness of spatial planning and circulation in supporting community activities. Clear movement routes, appropriately located entrances, well-organized activity spaces, and adequate connections between indoor and outdoor areas can improve user orientation and convenience. Flexible multipurpose spaces can also enable community centres to accommodate changing activities, group sizes, and event requirements without significant alterations to the building. Environmental and aesthetic qualities are additional components of effective community-centre design. Natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustic conditions, shading, landscaping, seating, and appropriate material selection can contribute to a comfortable and attractive environment. Architectural identity, visual openness, and integration with the surrounding neighbourhood can also influence the sense of welcome, belonging, and community ownership associated with the facility. Despite their importance, community centres may experience design challenges such as inadequate space, poor accessibility, insufficient supporting facilities, inflexible layouts, weak circulation systems, and limited consideration of diverse user needs. Inadequate separation between noisy and quiet activities may also create conflicts among users. Addressing these challenges requires a user-centred design approach that considers functional requirements, inclusivity, environmental conditions, community identity, and future adaptability. The study aims to assess the architectural design characteristics of community centres and identify factors that contribute to effective functionality, accessibility, comfort, flexibility, and user experience. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, community organizations, and facility managers in the design and improvement of community facilities. Ultimately, the study seeks to promote community centres that provide inclusive, adaptable, and engaging environments capable of supporting diverse community activities and strengthening social interaction.
