Assessment of Architectural Design Factors Affecting Sleep Quality in Student Hostels
Abstract
Sleep quality is an important consideration in the design of student hostels because adequate and undisturbed sleep contributes to students' physical wellbeing, concentration, academic performance, and overall quality of life. Hostel environments often accommodate many occupants within relatively compact spaces, creating potential challenges related to noise, lighting, thermal conditions, privacy, and room layout. Architectural design decisions can either reduce or intensify these disturbances. This study assesses architectural design factors affecting sleep quality in student hostels and examines how the physical characteristics of hostel environments influence occupants' sleeping conditions. The study focuses on bedroom configuration, room size, occupancy density, furniture arrangement, window placement, building orientation, and the relationship between sleeping areas and shared facilities. Attention is given to how these spatial characteristics influence privacy, movement, noise exposure, ventilation, and environmental comfort. The study also considers the location of bedrooms in relation to corridors, staircases, common rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and other potentially active areas within hostel buildings. Acoustic conditions are a major factor affecting sleep quality in student hostels. Noise from neighbouring rooms, corridors, common areas, outdoor activities, traffic, and building services can cause interruptions and reduce opportunities for restorative sleep. The study examines the influence of wall construction, doors, windows, room positioning, spatial separation, and acoustic finishes on noise transmission. Appropriate zoning and sound-control strategies are considered important for creating quieter sleeping environments. Thermal and visual conditions also influence the quality of hostel bedrooms. Natural ventilation, window size, shading, building orientation, and thermal characteristics of building envelopes can affect indoor temperatures and occupant comfort during sleeping hours. Similarly, excessive artificial lighting, outdoor illumination, and poorly controlled daylight may interfere with sleep. The study therefore assesses how lighting, ventilation, shading, and other environmental design strategies contribute to suitable sleeping conditions. Privacy and security are additional architectural factors that can influence students' ability to achieve comfortable and uninterrupted sleep. Adequate separation between sleeping spaces and high-traffic areas can reduce visual and acoustic disturbances, while appropriate access control can create a greater sense of safety. The study also considers the influence of shared facilities, circulation patterns, room entrances, and social spaces on the privacy and psychological comfort of hostel occupants. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the architectural factors affecting sleep quality in student hostels. It is expected to identify common design deficiencies and establish design considerations for improving acoustic comfort, thermal conditions, lighting, ventilation, privacy, and spatial organization. The findings will be useful to architects, educational planners, university administrators, and hostel developers in creating residential environments that support healthier sleeping conditions, student wellbeing, academic effectiveness, and overall residential satisfaction.
