Assessment of Acoustic Comfort in University Lecture Halls
Abstract
Acoustic comfort is an important aspect of the design and performance of university lecture halls because clear communication is essential for effective teaching and learning. Poor acoustic conditions can reduce speech intelligibility, increase listening effort, cause distraction, and negatively affect students' concentration and academic engagement. Large lecture halls are particularly susceptible to problems such as excessive reverberation, background noise, sound reflection, and uneven sound distribution. This study assesses acoustic comfort in university lecture halls and examines the architectural factors that influence the quality of the learning environment. The study focuses on the physical characteristics of lecture halls that affect acoustic performance, including room size, ceiling height, floor and wall finishes, seating arrangement, enclosure geometry, and openings. Attention is given to how these characteristics influence sound reflection, absorption, reverberation, and speech intelligibility within lecture spaces. The spatial relationship between teaching positions and student seating areas is also examined to determine how effectively sound is distributed throughout the hall. Reverberation is a major consideration in lecture hall acoustics because excessive reverberation can cause speech sounds to overlap and reduce clarity. The selection and placement of sound-absorbing materials on ceilings, walls, floors, and furniture can help control reflected sound and improve speech intelligibility. The study therefore assesses the effectiveness of acoustic finishes and other design measures in creating appropriate reverberation conditions for lectures and presentations. Background noise is another factor that can significantly influence acoustic comfort. Noise from adjacent classrooms, corridors, mechanical equipment, traffic, and outdoor activities may interfere with speech communication within lecture halls. The study considers the effectiveness of building envelopes, doors, windows, spatial zoning, and mechanical systems in controlling unwanted sound transmission. It also examines how internal planning can reduce conflicts between noisy activities and acoustically sensitive learning spaces. The assessment further considers students' and lecturers' perceptions of acoustic conditions, including speech clarity, listening effort, noise disturbance, and overall satisfaction. Differences in seating positions and the distance from sound sources are considered because acoustic conditions may vary considerably within large lecture halls. Understanding these user experiences provides additional insight into the relationship between measurable acoustic conditions and perceived learning comfort. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting acoustic comfort in university lecture halls. It is expected to identify common acoustic deficiencies and establish architectural and material-based strategies for improving speech intelligibility, noise control, and overall learning conditions. The findings will be useful to architects, educational planners, university administrators, and facility managers in developing lecture halls that support effective communication, concentration, student satisfaction, and improved educational performance.
