Effect of Anatomical Drawing on Students’ Understanding of Structural Relationships

Abstract

The study assesses the effect of anatomical drawing on students’ understanding of structural relationships. Anatomical drawing provides students with an active visual learning approach through which they can observe, reproduce, label, and organize anatomical structures. The process of drawing may encourage students to pay attention to the relative position, shape, orientation, and connections between structures and may complement conventional methods of anatomy teaching. The study will assess the effect of anatomical drawing on students’ understanding of structural relationships. The specific objectives will include determining students’ understanding of anatomical relationships before exposure to drawing-based learning activities, assessing their understanding after the intervention, evaluating their ability to represent the relative positions and relationships of selected anatomical structures through drawings, and assessing students’ perceptions of anatomical drawing as a learning approach. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to relevant study groups where applicable. Data will be collected using a structured anatomical relationships assessment administered before and after the anatomical drawing activities, together with an appropriately structured questionnaire for assessing students’ perceptions of the learning method. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate comparative inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to show differences in students’ understanding of structural relationships following exposure to anatomical drawing activities. Students may demonstrate improved ability to recognize the relative positions, orientations, connections, and spatial relationships of anatomical structures. Variations may also be observed in students’ ability to represent complex anatomical relationships through drawings, particularly when several structures are located within the same region or when their relationships require three-dimensional interpretation. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum developers, and institutions involved in health sciences education. The study may provide information on the potential contribution of anatomical drawing to visual and spatial learning and identify areas where drawing activities can complement specimens, models, diagrams, and digital learning resources. It may also support the development of active learning strategies that encourage students to engage directly with anatomical structures and their relationships. The study will conclude by assessing the effect of anatomical drawing on students’ understanding of structural relationships and determining its potential contribution to anatomy learning. It is recommended that appropriately structured anatomical drawing activities should be integrated into anatomy teaching alongside conventional practical and visual learning resources. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different drawing-based learning approaches are also recommended.
