Assessment of Students’ Ability to Identify Anatomical Structures During Practical Examinations

Abstract

The study examines students’ ability to identify anatomical structures during practical examinations, focusing on their capacity to recognize and correctly name structures presented through anatomical specimens, models, images, and other practical examination materials. Practical identification is an important component of anatomy education because it requires students to apply theoretical knowledge to actual anatomical structures and demonstrate an understanding of their location, appearance, orientation, and relationships. The study will assess students’ ability to identify selected anatomical structures during practical examinations and determine their level of accuracy across different anatomical regions. The study will also examine students’ ability to recognize structures based on their distinguishing features, anatomical relationships, spatial orientation, and position within dissected or displayed specimens. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have participated in practical anatomy examinations will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured practical anatomy identification assessment involving suitable anatomical specimens, models, images, or other standardized examination materials. Students’ responses will be scored using predetermined criteria, and the data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability among students in identifying anatomical structures during practical examinations. Differences may be observed in the identification of structures from different anatomical regions, with students potentially demonstrating stronger recognition of commonly encountered structures and greater difficulty with structures that are small, closely related, visually similar, or presented from unfamiliar perspectives. The findings may also reveal variations in students’ ability to apply anatomical knowledge under practical examination conditions. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, laboratory instructors, medical educators, and curriculum developers involved in practical anatomy education. The study may provide information on students’ practical identification abilities and help educators identify anatomical regions and structures that require greater emphasis during practical training. The findings may also support the development of structured specimen-based exercises, repeated identification activities, practical demonstrations, and objective assessment strategies. The study will conclude by documenting students’ ability to identify anatomical structures during practical examinations and identifying areas where additional practical support may be required. It is recommended that students receive adequate exposure to anatomical specimens, models, and images representing different views and anatomical regions, together with supervised identification exercises before practical examinations. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are also recommended to provide broader evidence on students’ practical anatomy identification abilities.
