Impact of Working Hours on Participation in Adult Education Programmes

Abstract

Working hours refer to the amount of time adults spend performing paid employment or work-related duties within a specified period, while participation in adult education programmes refers to adults’ involvement in organised learning activities through enrolment, attendance, engagement, and continued involvement. The demands of employment may affect the amount of time available for adults to attend classes, complete learning activities, and meet programme requirements. This study will examine the impact of working hours on participation in adult education programmes, with the purpose of determining whether the amount of time adults spend working influences their participation in adult education. Working hours may vary among adult learners depending on their occupations, employment arrangements, work schedules, and daily responsibilities. Adults who work for extended periods may have limited time available for attending educational activities, studying, completing assignments, and preparing for assessments. Irregular or demanding work schedules may also make it difficult for some adults to maintain consistent involvement in educational programmes. Participation in adult education programmes involves activities such as enrolment, regular attendance, active involvement during learning sessions, completion of assignments, participation in assessments, and continued engagement until programme requirements are fulfilled. Adult learners are often required to balance educational commitments with employment responsibilities. The number of hours spent working may therefore influence their availability and ability to participate consistently in adult education programmes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on respondents’ working hours and their level of participation in adult education programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that working hours have a significant impact on participation in adult education programmes. It is expected that adults with longer working hours may demonstrate lower levels of attendance, engagement, and continued participation than adults with shorter or more flexible working schedules. The study may further establish that demanding work schedules reduce the time available for attending classes, completing learning activities, and meeting programme requirements. The findings will have implications for the planning and delivery of adult education programmes. Adult education providers may need to consider the employment schedules of learners when organising classes and other programme activities. Flexible learning arrangements, convenient class periods, and appropriate scheduling may help adults balance their employment responsibilities with educational commitments and encourage more consistent participation. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme administrators, employers, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from learning arrangements that recognise their employment commitments, while adult educators and programme administrators may gain information for developing schedules that accommodate working adults. Employers may also recognise the importance of supporting employees who pursue further education, while educational planners may use the findings when designing accessible adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education providers should consider the working hours of adult learners when planning programme schedules and learning activities. Flexible class timetables, suitable learning periods, and adaptable programme structures should be encouraged to accommodate adults with demanding work schedules. Adult learners should also be encouraged to organise their work and educational responsibilities effectively. The study will conclude that working hours can influence participation in adult education programmes and should be considered in the planning and delivery of adult learning opportunities.
