Impact of Adult Education on Youth Engagement in Community Organisations
Abstract
Adult education provides learning opportunities that equip individuals with knowledge, skills, values, and competencies needed for effective participation in society. Youth engagement in community organisations is important for promoting collective action, social responsibility, leadership, and community development. However, limited educational opportunities may reduce young people's understanding of community organisations and their willingness to become actively involved in their activities. This study will examine the impact of adult education on youth engagement in community organisations, with emphasis on how educational experiences can encourage young people to become active members and contributors within organized community groups. Adult education encompasses structured and flexible learning opportunities such as literacy programmes, vocational education, skills acquisition, civic education, entrepreneurship training, and community-based learning. These programmes provide young people with knowledge and practical competencies that can improve their understanding of social issues, group responsibilities, leadership, cooperation, and community needs. Through discussions, group activities, practical exercises, and community-oriented learning experiences, adult education can expose youths to the importance of organized collective action and encourage them to contribute to community organisations. Youth engagement in community organisations refers to the active involvement of young people in the activities, programmes, decision-making processes, and initiatives of organized groups within their communities. It may involve attending meetings, volunteering, contributing ideas, carrying out assigned responsibilities, participating in projects, and supporting organisational programmes. Adult education can influence youth engagement by providing knowledge about organisational roles and responsibilities while developing skills that enable young people to communicate, cooperate, take responsibility, and contribute effectively to group activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise youths participating in selected adult education programmes and community organisations. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and youth engagement in community organisations. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive impact on youth engagement in community organisations. It is anticipated that youths exposed to adult education programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in organisational activities, increased willingness to undertake responsibilities, and stronger participation in group initiatives. The study is also expected to show that educational experiences can provide young people with relevant knowledge and skills for contributing meaningfully to organized community activities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education by highlighting the importance of incorporating practical group-based and community-oriented learning activities into programmes for young people. Adult educators may use collaborative projects, leadership exercises, group discussions, community assignments, and organisational activities to provide learners with opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-life settings. Such approaches can strengthen learning outcomes while encouraging youths to develop the competencies required for effective engagement in community organisations. The study will be significant to adult educators, community organisations, youth development organisations, community leaders, educational institutions, policymakers, and development agencies. Adult educators may use the findings to design programmes that prepare youths for constructive involvement in organized community activities. Community organisations and youth development agencies may also benefit from understanding the role of education in encouraging young people to contribute their skills, ideas, and efforts to organisational activities and community initiatives. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate learning activities that develop teamwork, leadership, organisational responsibility, communication, and community involvement among young people. Community organisations should provide opportunities for educated youths to participate in meetings, projects, volunteering, and other organisational activities. It will also recommend stronger collaboration between adult education providers and community organisations to create practical learning opportunities that encourage youth engagement. The study concludes that effective adult education can contribute to stronger and more meaningful youth engagement in community organisations.
