Impact of Adult Education Programmes on Parents’ Participation in School-Community Activities

Abstract

Adult education programmes provide opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes that can improve their ability to perform personal, social, and community responsibilities. Parents’ participation in school-community activities is important for strengthening cooperation between families, schools, and the wider community. However, limited educational opportunities may affect parents’ understanding of school-related responsibilities and reduce their involvement in activities organized to support learners and schools. This study will examine the impact of adult education programmes on parents’ participation in school-community activities. Adult education programmes include literacy education, continuing education, vocational training, parenting education, community education, and other structured learning opportunities designed to meet the needs of adult learners. Through classroom instruction, discussions, practical activities, workshops, and community-based learning, parents can acquire knowledge and skills relevant to family responsibilities, education, communication, and community affairs. Such programmes can also expose parents to information about the importance of supporting children's education and cooperating with schools. Parents’ participation in school-community activities refers to the involvement of parents in activities organized by schools and communities to support students’ educational development and school improvement. Such activities may include parent-teacher meetings, school-community meetings, educational programmes, school improvement activities, volunteering, fundraising, and other activities involving families and schools. Adult education programmes may influence this participation by improving parents’ knowledge of educational responsibilities and providing them with skills that enable them to interact and cooperate more effectively with schools and community groups. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents participating in selected adult education programmes within communities served by selected schools. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education programmes and parents’ participation in school-community activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education programmes have a positive impact on parents’ participation in school-community activities. It is anticipated that parents who participate in adult education programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in school meetings, community-school initiatives, volunteering, and other educational activities. The study may also establish that adult learning provides parents with relevant knowledge and communication skills that encourage greater involvement in activities aimed at supporting schools and learners. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education by emphasizing the importance of incorporating family and community-related issues into adult learning programmes. Adult educators may include parenting education, school-community relations, communication activities, and practical discussions on educational responsibilities in programme content. These approaches can make adult education more relevant to parents’ everyday responsibilities while encouraging them to apply acquired knowledge in supporting schools and their children's education. The study will be significant to adult educators, parents, teachers, school administrators, community leaders, parent organizations, policymakers, and educational institutions. Adult educators may use the findings to develop programmes that respond to parents’ educational and community responsibilities. Schools and community leaders may also benefit from understanding how adult education can encourage greater parental involvement in school-related activities, while policymakers may use the findings to strengthen adult education initiatives that support family and community participation in education. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant content on parenting responsibilities, educational support, communication, and school-community relationships. Schools and adult education providers should create opportunities for parents to apply their learning through school meetings, volunteering, community projects, and other collaborative activities. It will also recommend stronger collaboration between adult education centres, schools, parent organizations, and community leaders. The study concludes that effective adult education programmes can contribute to increased parents’ participation in school-community activities and strengthen cooperation between families, schools, and communities.
