Effect of Community Literacy Centres on Adult Learners’ Participation in Continuing Education

Abstract

Community literacy centres are community-based educational facilities established to provide accessible literacy and learning opportunities to individuals who may have limited access to formal education, while participation in continuing education refers to the involvement of adult learners in further learning activities after their initial schooling. Continuing education is important for adults because it provides opportunities to acquire new knowledge, improve existing skills, and adapt to changing personal, social, and occupational demands. However, inadequate access to convenient learning facilities may limit the participation of adult learners in continuing education. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of community literacy centres on adult learners’ participation in continuing education. Community literacy centres provide learning opportunities within communities and may offer flexible schedules, literacy classes, vocational learning, basic education, and other continuing education activities. Their community-based nature can reduce some barriers associated with distance, cost, and limited access to educational institutions. The availability of suitable learning spaces, instructional materials, qualified facilitators, and relevant programmes may encourage adults to participate more regularly in educational activities. Participation in continuing education involves adults enrolling in, attending, and actively engaging in educational programmes beyond their previous formal schooling. It may include literacy education, vocational training, skills development, health education, entrepreneurship education, and other forms of lifelong learning. Community literacy centres may influence such participation by providing accessible learning opportunities that are relevant to the needs and circumstances of adult learners. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected community literacy centres. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure the availability and effectiveness of community literacy centres and adult learners’ participation in continuing education. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community literacy centres have a significant effect on adult learners’ participation in continuing education. Adult learners who have access to functional and accessible community literacy centres are expected to demonstrate higher levels of attendance, engagement, and continued participation in educational programmes. The study may also establish that the availability of relevant learning opportunities within communities can encourage adults to pursue further education. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to design learning activities that reflect the educational, social, and occupational needs of community members. Flexible learning schedules, relevant instructional materials, participatory teaching methods, and practical learning activities may encourage adult learners to remain actively involved in continuing education programmes. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community literacy centre managers, educational planners, community development organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved access to continuing education opportunities, while educators and centre managers may gain information for improving programme delivery. Educational planners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen community-based literacy initiatives and promote lifelong learning. The study recommends that community literacy centres should be adequately supported with relevant instructional materials, qualified facilitators, suitable learning facilities, and programmes that reflect the needs of adult learners. Centres should also provide flexible learning arrangements that accommodate adults’ work, family, and community responsibilities. The study concludes that accessible and well-organized community literacy centres can contribute significantly to increasing adult learners’ participation in continuing education.
