Impact of Work-Family Balance on Participation among Adult Learners
Abstract
Work-family balance refers to the ability of adults to effectively manage the demands of employment and family responsibilities while maintaining sufficient time and attention for other important activities, while participation among adult learners refers to their involvement in educational activities through attendance, engagement, completion of learning tasks, and continued involvement in their programmes. Adult learners who combine employment, family responsibilities, and education may experience difficulties in allocating adequate time to their learning activities. This study will examine the impact of work-family balance on participation among adult learners, with the purpose of determining whether the ability to balance work and family responsibilities influences adults’ participation in learning. Work-family balance involves managing employment duties and family responsibilities in a way that allows adults to meet the expectations associated with both areas. Adult learners may need to attend to work schedules, household responsibilities, childcare, family needs, and educational commitments simultaneously. Effective management of these responsibilities can provide adults with greater opportunity to allocate time and attention to educational activities, while difficulties in balancing competing responsibilities may reduce the time available for learning. Participation among adult learners refers to the extent to which adults become involved in educational activities and remain engaged with their learning programmes. It may be reflected in regular attendance, active involvement during learning sessions, completion of assignments, participation in assessments, and continued involvement in educational activities. The ability to maintain an appropriate balance between work and family responsibilities may influence the amount of time and energy adult learners can devote to these educational activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure work-family balance and participation among adult learners. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that work-family balance has a significant impact on participation among adult learners. It is expected that adult learners who experience better balance between their work and family responsibilities will demonstrate higher levels of attendance, engagement, and involvement in educational activities. The study may further establish that difficulties in managing work and family demands can reduce the time and energy available for consistent educational participation. The findings will have implications for adult education practice and programme administration. Adult education providers may need to recognise the multiple responsibilities of working adult learners when designing learning schedules and programme requirements. Flexible class arrangements, suitable learning periods, and manageable learning activities may help learners coordinate their work, family, and educational responsibilities more effectively. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme administrators, employers, families, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from educational arrangements that recognise their work and family responsibilities, while adult educators and programme administrators may gain information for designing learner-friendly programmes. Employers and families may also gain greater awareness of the importance of supporting adults who combine employment and family responsibilities with education. The study will recommend that adult education providers should develop flexible learning arrangements that accommodate the work and family responsibilities of adult learners. Programme schedules should be planned at convenient periods, while learning activities should provide reasonable flexibility where possible. Adult educators should also provide clear programme information and manageable learning requirements to support consistent participation. The study will conclude that work-family balance can influence participation among adult learners and should be considered in the planning and delivery of adult education programmes.
