Impact of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Decorative Materials

Abstract

Vocational education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support occupational competence, creativity, self-reliance, and income-generating activities. Decorative materials are important in interior decoration, event decoration, craft production, furniture enhancement, and other creative activities. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the types, uses, characteristics, and appropriate applications of decorative materials due to inadequate vocational exposure. This study will examine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of decorative materials. Vocational education may expose adults to different decorative materials such as fabrics, ribbons, beads, artificial flowers, decorative papers, wallpapers, foams, trims, cords, and other materials used for decorative purposes. Learning activities may include demonstrations, material identification exercises, discussions, practical projects, and guided selection of materials for specific decorative tasks. These activities can help adults become familiar with the characteristics, functions, handling, and appropriate applications of different decorative materials. Adults’ knowledge of decorative materials refers to their ability to identify, describe, classify, and explain the uses and characteristics of materials commonly applied in decorative activities. This may include knowledge of material quality, texture, durability, colour suitability, compatibility, handling, storage, and appropriate use for particular decorative purposes. Vocational education can strengthen this knowledge by combining explanations with practical activities that enable adults to examine and work with different decorative materials. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a decorative materials knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant materials, characteristics, and uses. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of decorative materials. The study is expected to establish that vocational education can improve adults’ knowledge of decorative materials. Adults exposed to structured vocational learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of material identification, characteristics, quality, appropriate selection, handling, and application. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and material-based activities enhance adults’ ability to distinguish between different decorative materials and select suitable materials for specific decorative purposes. The study will conclude that vocational education can provide an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of decorative materials. It will recommend that vocational education programmes provide adequate practical demonstrations, samples of relevant decorative materials, guided identification activities, and opportunities for adults to practise material selection and application. Improved knowledge of decorative materials may contribute to greater creative competence, vocational development, self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and income-generating opportunities
