Impact of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Batik Production Techniques

Abstract

Vocational education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support self-employment, income generation, and participation in textile-related activities. Batik production is a practical textile craft that involves knowledge of fabric selection, design preparation, dyeing materials, resist application, colour development, drying, and finishing procedures. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate batik production techniques because of inadequate access to structured vocational learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of batik production techniques. Vocational education provides practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In batik production, adults can learn how to identify suitable fabrics and dyes, prepare designs, apply resist materials, fold or tie fabrics where appropriate, carry out dyeing procedures, remove resist materials, and complete the finishing process. These learning activities can help adults relate theoretical explanations to practical experiences while developing a clearer understanding of the procedures required for producing quality batik fabrics. Adults’ knowledge of batik production techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, and processes involved in producing batik designs. Adequate knowledge is important because errors in fabric preparation, design application, resist placement, dye preparation, colour application, and finishing can affect the quality and appearance of the finished product. Vocational education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured practical instruction, demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate batik production procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of batik production techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of batik production techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in vocational education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of batik production techniques. Adults exposed to structured vocational learning are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of fabric selection, design preparation, resist application, dye preparation, dyeing procedures, colour development, and finishing techniques. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities provide adults with opportunities to develop stronger understanding and retention of batik production procedures. The study will conclude that vocational education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of batik production techniques. It will recommend that vocational education programmes provide adequate batik production materials and tools, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and appropriate guidance on safe handling of dyes and other materials. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their capacity to apply batik production techniques effectively for personal, entrepreneurial, and income-generating purposes.
