Impact of Sign-Language Education on Adults’ Ability to Communicate with Deaf Persons

Abstract

Sign-Language Education refers to organized learning experiences that equip adults with knowledge and practical skills for using sign language to communicate effectively with deaf persons. Adults’ ability to communicate with deaf persons is important for promoting social inclusion, mutual understanding, participation, and equal access to everyday interactions and services. However, limited knowledge of sign language may create communication difficulties and reduce the ability of adults to interact confidently with deaf persons. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Sign-Language Education on adults’ ability to communicate with deaf persons. Sign-Language Education exposes adults to basic signs, hand configurations, facial expressions, body movements, fingerspelling, vocabulary, sentence formation, and appropriate communication practices. Through structured lessons, demonstrations, guided practice, and interactive activities, adults can develop practical skills for expressing ideas and understanding messages communicated through sign language. The learning process can also introduce participants to appropriate communication etiquette and the importance of patience, attentiveness, and respectful interaction when communicating with deaf persons. Adults’ ability to communicate with deaf persons involves their capacity to understand and use appropriate signs, convey basic information, interpret simple signed messages, and engage in meaningful interactions. Effective communication requires not only knowledge of signs but also appropriate attention to visual communication, facial expressions, body movements, and conversational practices. Sign-Language Education may strengthen these abilities by providing adults with repeated opportunities to practise communication skills and apply them in realistic interactional situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and inclusive-learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate practical communication assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to communicate with deaf persons. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Sign-Language Education on adults’ ability to communicate with deaf persons. The study is expected to establish that Sign-Language Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to communicate with deaf persons. Adults exposed to relevant sign-language learning are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in using basic signs, understanding signed messages, expressing simple ideas, and participating more confidently in interactions with deaf persons. The study is also expected to indicate that practical communication exercises can strengthen adults’ confidence and reduce communication barriers in social, educational, community, and service-related settings. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, sign-language instructors, inclusive-education practitioners, community educators, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may benefit from incorporating basic sign-language learning into relevant community and lifelong-learning activities. Demonstrations, role-playing, paired practice, interactive communication exercises, and practical signing sessions could provide adults with meaningful opportunities to develop and apply sign-language skills in realistic situations. The study is expected to contribute to the understanding of how Adult Education can promote inclusive communication and strengthen adults’ ability to interact effectively with deaf persons. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide appropriate opportunities for adults to acquire basic sign-language knowledge and practical communication skills. Such programmes should emphasize regular practice, respectful interaction, visual communication, and practical application. The study concludes that effective Sign-Language Education can improve adults’ ability to communicate with deaf persons and contribute to more inclusive social participation and community interaction.
