Impact of Self-Assessment Activities on Learning Reflection among Adult Learners

Abstract

Self-assessment activities refer to structured learning activities through which learners examine their own understanding, performance, strengths, and areas requiring improvement, while learning reflection refers to the process of thoughtfully reviewing learning experiences in order to understand what has been learned, identify difficulties, and consider ways of improving future learning. For adult learners, the ability to reflect on learning experiences can support greater awareness of their educational development and encourage purposeful improvement. However, limited opportunities to assess and reflect on personal learning experiences may reduce learners’ awareness of their progress and learning needs. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of self-assessment activities on learning reflection among adult learners. Self-assessment activities provide learners with opportunities to examine their understanding and performance through exercises such as learning reviews, self-rating activities, reflective questions, progress checks, and evaluation of completed tasks. These activities encourage learners to consider what they understand, what they find difficult, and which aspects of their learning require further attention. Regular engagement in self-assessment can provide adults with structured opportunities to examine their learning experiences and become more conscious of their individual learning development. Learning reflection involves deliberately thinking about learning experiences, identifying important lessons, examining difficulties, and considering how future learning activities can be improved. Reflective learners are able to review their experiences and use the knowledge gained from those experiences to guide subsequent learning activities. Self-assessment activities can promote learning reflection by encouraging adult learners to examine their own performance and think critically about their learning experiences, achievements, and areas requiring improvement. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in self-assessment activities and the level of learning reflection among adult learners. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that self-assessment activities have a positive impact on learning reflection among adult learners. Adult learners who regularly participate in self-assessment activities are expected to demonstrate greater ability to review their learning experiences, recognize strengths and weaknesses, identify learning difficulties, and consider appropriate ways of improving their future learning activities. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may integrate regular self-assessment activities into instructional practices through reflective questions, learning reviews, performance checklists, and opportunities for learners to examine completed tasks. These activities can encourage learners to become more actively involved in reviewing their learning experiences and applying insights gained from reflection to subsequent learning activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased awareness of their learning experiences and areas requiring improvement, while adult educators may gain useful strategies for promoting reflective learning. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen learner-centred assessment practices within adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes provide regular opportunities for learners to engage in self-assessment and reflection. Adult educators should use practical self-assessment activities and encourage learners to review their performance, identify learning challenges, and consider strategies for improving future learning. The study will conclude that appropriate self-assessment activities can strengthen learning reflection among adult learners and promote greater awareness of their own learning experiences.
